"David and his assistant fixed 3 holes in a second story deck then applied a metal lath and troweled on a layer of deckcretethe first day. 2nd day applied a fiberglass mat and saturated with laminating resins. David then shot a layer of knockdown texture to the deck and finally applied a resin sealer finish coat over the deck. The deck need 24 hours drying and 3 day wait before placing items on the deck. The whole project went nicely and the new deck looks great and should need a sealing in 5 years."

"We are preparing for more rain than usual and purchased a coupon for Thomas Parks Contracting to clean and repair our gutters.  Upon inspecting the roof while he was doing the gutter work, Thomas told us it was in fairly good shape and just needs some maintenance.  He also recommended a sealer.  We contracted for the work and he came within a few days with a crew to perform the work. All the work was done with professionalism and an attention to detail.  They even repaired two of our gates into the back yard - above the call of duty.  I recommend them with no reservations."

"This is the third time we've used Mark to clear off a list of home maintenance fix-its. Mark is a truly amazing service provider- professional, honest, efficient, knowledgable, creative when needed, personable, and completes jobs quickly without sacrificing quality- all at a reasonable price. As usual, he arrived a few minutes early, briefly went over the list of items and immediately started working. I purchased the wrong part to fix the washing machine valve. Mark gave me the option of going back to Home Depot to get the connector or he would make the trip for me. Needless to say, I had Mark pick up the part and he was back in a flash; he was already working on the rest of the list when I returned from an errand. Mark did a complete walk through of all the work to make sure it was completed to our satisfaction. We understood that the French door really needed to be taken apart to find out what the problem was with the locking mechanism and I would pursue it with the original company we purchased the door from. After Mark left, my husband inadvertently did something to the door so that it would not lock. This was no reflection on Mark's work, just an overly curious husband. I immediately contacted Mark to have him come back, fully expecting to reschedule and pay for a separate visit.. I was beyond happy when he came back and fixed the door...and refused to have me pay for the extra work he did! Mark will always be at the top of our "go-to" resources.

"We are extremely pleased with Brian Broderick's work. Brian is a very competent, friendly, efficient handyman. His bid was very reasonable. He was prompt; he arrived when he said he would and worked on the gate in the driveway. He re-attached the gate to the house and to the fence like it was no big deal. (Obviously for those of us incapable of such work, it was a miracle.) Brian was very nice, worked quickly, had excellent suggestions and is truly a master of all trades. We look forward to working with him again, as the list of "to-dos" has grown quite long. We highly recommend Brian's services. Two thumbs up!"

"We got our pool done by Green Remodeling and are very pleased with the end result. It took 3 months from start to finish. Ilan came with his designer and came up with an amazing layout which exceeded our expectations. We thought we may have issues with inspection due to the property location but, all went well. Thanks"

"BG Tile and Construction just completed a complete redo of my master bathroom. As they were referred by a friend, I had high expectations and they surpassed them. The bathroom is an absolute masterpiece. Joseph, Sam and Avi held my hand through this entire process. This was a complete gut job and having never renovated before this was a new experience for me. From the beginning Joseph and his team were there every day making sure the job went according to plan. If I had any questions, they answered me immediately and found solutions to everything that came up. I am very high maintenance and they never lost patience with me, which says at lot. All the different subs that worked on the project were so professional and courteous and took care not to leave any mess behind when they left for the day. The project was extremely well managed and turned out to be absolutely gorgeous. I enjoyed working with them so much that I am starting to think of the next project to do together. Anyone thinking of doing a remodel should definitely contact Joseph and his team. You will not be sorry!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Pressure-treated decking may be worth it if you want a natural, insect- and rot-resistant decking material that will last for decades with proper maintenance. As such, it’s a much better option than untreated pine. Alternative wood decking materials like cedar and redwood tend to be less durable and more expensive. Some homeowners prefer composite decking, which is a low-maintenance alternative to wood but is also more costly.

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.

Yes, you can draw your own deck plans in many cases. However, you must know your local building codes and be familiar with carpentry principles. Even then, it's always best to run your plans by a professional contractor with experience building decks, whether you choose to DIY some of the build or not.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.
