"Dave was punctual and was very hardworking, making sure my new decking system was installed correctly. He took the time to install each layer of the decking system and made the finished surface graded so the water drained off perfectly. I would hire him again if I ever need to redo my deck."

"The painting done looks gorgeous and on can tell that the painting was professionally done. The final contract that was drawn up for me to sign had great detail and was accurate. The production manager included some extra things as painting the retaining wall in the back yard. The painters spoke courteously to me and my wife. The foreman spoke perfect English. One of the painters helped my wife go down the driveway with her walker down to her car that was parked on the street. The painters showed up on time and didn't make a lot of noise like loud talking or playing the radio loud during their lunch breaks. I was especially pleased with the workmanship. They put two coats of paint plus primer on all surfaces, and I am sure that the paint will look good beyond the five year warranty period. The company seemed to have a lot of integrity and will take care of anything that was inadvertently missed. They left at least half a can of paint of each color and some stucco for future touch up."

"Thomas Parks was very good about keeping in touch with me, as we were trying to schedule a day when he and his crew could come out to do the work.
They were on time and did a good job. Since it has not rained very hard since they were out, they made sure to test out all the gutters with the water hose before they left.
I would use them again.

"We hired Miguel and his crew when we first moved in to install a railing to our basement stairs.  The stairs had a handrail on one side but no spindles and no rail or spindles on the other side.  With small children in the house, this was a safety hazard.  I interviewed 3 contractors and Miguel gave us the best pricing and several options on how to install the rail and spindles.  He and his assistant was able to install a railing that matched the existing railing.  The railing and spindles they installed are SOLID and look great.  They also were able to install a fan in one of the bathrooms.  They connected the vent to an existing vent from another bathroom so did not have to put another hole on the side of my house, which I appreciated.  It was a big job and they got it done all in one day, which was impressive.  My husband was at home at the time and reported that Miguel and his assistant worked very hard and were very professional.
A few months later, we hired Miguel to replace the supporting posts to our deck. Our deck is one story off the ground and the existing supporting posts were not large enough (not up to code).  Miguel put a large horizontal beam across the bottom of the deck and attached 3 sufficiently large vertical supports to the horizontal beam.  They did a good job but the only thing was they did not paint the post to match the rest of the deck.  (Perhaps we should've been more clear about our expectations.)  Also, they used shims on one of the posts and it looks a little unfinished, but the deck seems to be fine so perhaps it's just cosmetic.  Overall, we are please and would hire Cancun Construction again.

"This is the third time we've used Mark to clear off a list of home maintenance fix-its. Mark is a truly amazing service provider- professional, honest, efficient, knowledgable, creative when needed, personable, and completes jobs quickly without sacrificing quality- all at a reasonable price. As usual, he arrived a few minutes early, briefly went over the list of items and immediately started working. I purchased the wrong part to fix the washing machine valve. Mark gave me the option of going back to Home Depot to get the connector or he would make the trip for me. Needless to say, I had Mark pick up the part and he was back in a flash; he was already working on the rest of the list when I returned from an errand. Mark did a complete walk through of all the work to make sure it was completed to our satisfaction. We understood that the French door really needed to be taken apart to find out what the problem was with the locking mechanism and I would pursue it with the original company we purchased the door from. After Mark left, my husband inadvertently did something to the door so that it would not lock. This was no reflection on Mark's work, just an overly curious husband. I immediately contacted Mark to have him come back, fully expecting to reschedule and pay for a separate visit.. I was beyond happy when he came back and fixed the door...and refused to have me pay for the extra work he did! Mark will always be at the top of our "go-to" resources.

"We are extremely pleased with Brian Broderick's work. Brian is a very competent, friendly, efficient handyman. His bid was very reasonable. He was prompt; he arrived when he said he would and worked on the gate in the driveway. He re-attached the gate to the house and to the fence like it was no big deal. (Obviously for those of us incapable of such work, it was a miracle.) Brian was very nice, worked quickly, had excellent suggestions and is truly a master of all trades. We look forward to working with him again, as the list of "to-dos" has grown quite long. We highly recommend Brian's services. Two thumbs up!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

A deck doesn’t have to be perfectly level. Many pros even recommend a gentle slope to ensure proper drainage and increase longevity. The ideal gentle slope is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the property, leading water away from the home to prevent pooling and reduce the risk of damage. It also minimizes rot, mold, and other moisture-related problems.

Yes, pressure washing a wood deck can be a good idea as it effectively lifts ingrained dirt, mold, and mildew, improving the deck's appearance and longevity. However, it must be done carefully, as it's easy to damage the wood, especially softwoods. To pressure wash safely, use a lower pressure setting and a wide, 40-degree fan pattern nozzle (often white). Keep the nozzle at least a foot away from the wood surface and maintain constant motion, avoiding hovering in one spot to prevent gouging.

For a 12x20-foot (240-square-foot) deck, you can expect to pay between $7,200 and $14,400. This cost is based on a general price of $30 to $60 per square foot. The final price will depend on factors such as the decking material, design complexity, deck type, location, and local labor costs. Keep in mind that add-ons will increase the total; for example, adding an under-deck drainage system to a deck of this size could cost an additional $7,700.

Pressure-treated decks last 15 to 20 years on average, but with proper maintenance, you could get 40 to 50 years of value from yours. Reseal your deck every one to two years, and replace old or rotted wood as soon as possible to avoid structural damage. Where you live plays a role in the lifespan of your deck. Intense sunlight, rainfall, wind, and hail can reduce the deck’s lifespan.

Composite decking may never warp, or it may warp quickly. Several factors can influence the rate of warping, including the material's quality, installation method, and installation location. Generally speaking, high-quality materials that have been installed properly are drastically less prone to warping.
