"Veronica & Oscar from V & M Landscaping just completed a complete revamp of our front and back yard. The project included removing all existing landscaping, laying new pavers for a patio & walkway, building a pavilion from a kit we had purchased, installing yard and walkway lights, new irrigation, installing some artificial turf and planting all new plants. V&M did a fantastic job. Oscar & his team were here everyday at 8:00 a.m. and had everything cleaned up at 4:00 p.m. Veronica was available to quickly answer all questions I had. Both were onsite everyday to ensure the project stayed on schedule. I would highly recommend them for any landscaping projects you have, large or small."

"I am very happy with the result of Cal Preserving's work on my patio deck.  A very good value for money in my opinion.  Bruce Watkins was responsive to my request for a quote, and did his best to get the work done in a timely manner.  Cal Preserving is busy (and good for them!) so it took several conversations to get the work scheduled.  I appreciated the fact that Bruce wanted to my job when the crews would be in the area doing other work.  My job was small and able to be completed it in two days. I was impressed by their honesty about my deck not needing to be sanded, which saved me at least $400.
Good guys, I'll use them again!
Thanks Bruce.

"We have a patio area with a translucent roof and wanted to have more protection to be able to area in cooler weather. The roof has a slope so a triangular shaped transom was also necessary above the curtain rods. The estimator created a design and recommended hardware. In addition to the curtains, Acme created and installed 2 awnings. We visited the showroom / factory to choose our fabric and were very impressed with their work on display. During installation one of the transoms did not quite fit and it was very quickly remade and installed. Everyone we met at the company was courteous and professional. We highly recommend this company.

"I looked up deck maintenance on Angie's List, and from there visited the web sites of several contractors.
When I called Rupert, he was very responsive. One thing I really appreciated was that he asked me to describe my decks and their approximate size, and gave me a "ballpark" estimate of what it would cost to clean and stain my decks. This gave me confidence that he was customer oriented ... if the ballpark estimate was not in my price range, we could discuss alternatives.

Rupert came out within a few days, at my convenience, did precise measurements, and gave me a detailed estimate that turned out to be very close to the original ballpark estimate. He went over various types of stain and colors, discussed the pros and cons, and recommended a few that he thought would match very well to my house color and landscaping. We picked a semi-opaque stain that had a redwood hue, with good UV value because my decks had southern exposure and would get a lot of sun. He also advised me up front that the particular stain would take well to future maintenance efficiency, and why. Clearly thinking ahead several years. He went over in great detail the cleaning and staining process, and what I should and should not expect.

Within a few days, Mike arrived and did the cleaning and brightening. Just that step made the decks, which were 10+ years old, look close to being new wood. The cleaning process left absolutely no residue or dirt on my landscaping, patio or home.

After the wood dried, Mike returned and did the staining. He took great care to explain the process, and again, not a drop of stain ended up anywhere but on the decks. And how great they look.

I purposefully waited a few months to write the review to see how the decks would weather, and I can say they both still look magnificent. All my backyard neighbors have commented on how beautiful the house looks with the newly stained decks.

After the staining was completed, Rupert returned to confirm with me my satisfaction with the job. He took a few pictures, but I have not yet seen them on his website. If I see a photo in the future, I will return to this site to add the photo.

Again, thanks to Rupert and Mike.

Patios questions, answered by experts

In almost all cases, you will need permits if you plan on building a sunroom over your patio, but regulations and requirements will depend on your municipality. Permits to enclose your patio will usually cost between $300 and $1,000. Since navigating local building codes and zoning requirements is challenging—and the consequences of not following them can be extremely expensive—we strongly recommend hiring a sunroom builder to complete the work and pull the permits for you.

A deck is typically attached to a house and accessed via the back door. Decks are usually constructed from wood or composite materials. A terrace, on the other hand, is a raised platform that can be attached to or detached from the house and is typically made from a hard-paved material, such as paving stones. Terraces can be built on the ground or on the roof of a home.

The least expensive way to enclose a porch is with screens. These protect the room by preventing insects from entering and, if you live in a warm climate, provide excellent airflow during hot summer months. Screens cost far less than any other alternative, so if you are against getting permits, spending too much, or enclosing your porch in walls or glass, screens are the best choice.

Your maintenance needs revolve around the type of foundation you choose, as well as how you furnish or decorate it. Patios require little else other than the occasional hose-down, but decks and other wooden structures will require annual power washing and sealing. You may also need to restain the wood every two to three years.

Adding a solid roof rather than building a pergola or leaving the space open will make maintenance much easier. Without a roof, you will need to spend more time sweeping, washing, and covering your furniture to protect it from UV bleaching.

The average cost to screen-in your patio ranges from $2,000 to $4,000. How much you spend depends on the size of your patio, the materials used, and construction complexity. Some patio screen room kits are easy to DIY, but you may need to hire a local screened-in porch builder and obtain permits for more complex designs.
