"Here’s my last email to the company. says it all: This email serves as a formal reminder that I discontinued service with your company effective immediately on 8/28/23. It’s my understanding that you sent two people out to look at the pool on it about that same day after I spoke briefly with someone I believe is named Kevin. I explained the pool was pea-soup green with algae. Kevin said something to the effect of, “We need to see first if it’s algae. It could be something else.” It seemed to me that you should have known, since a tech was there the day before and the pool was unusable for EIGHT WEEKS. A few pool logs indicated the pool needed to be shocked. I never heard back from Kevin after the two-person inspection. Typical. No follow-up and zero communication. At the very least I expected an apology since I was paying $150 per month for the last two months fior a completely ineffective service. On Friday, I went to a pool supply store and purchased $200 worth of chemicals. Now, two days later, my pool is beginning to recover. Let Kevin know: It was algae. It is clear to me that you did not want to do what was necessary to fix the problem that your inadequate service created because it would have cost quite a bit more than $150 I paid per month for the 10-minute weekly “service” calls from your tech. As the pool’s condition worsened, I even tried to engage, and asked if there was anything I should do. I received no response. You preferred to string me along and continued to charge me for service you were not providing until such time as I canceled. There are only three explanations for this: You are either incompetent, inadequately staffed, or too greedy to provide the pool service you promised. I will not hesitate to tell anyone who I speak to about the poor service that we have received. But I should thank you for helping me realize I can handle my pool needs in my own; I can’t do any worse than you did. Do not send anyone back to my home. I will consider it trespassing."

Pool and Spa Servicing questions, answered by experts

The cost to repair a hot tub or spa ranges from about $170 to $550, depending on the repairs needed. Some of the most common hot tub repairs include leaks, clogged filters, and tripped GFCI breakers. If it’s an electrical problem, you should contact a professional hot tub repair service. Don’t DIY electrical repairs on a hot tub, as poorly repaired wiring can make the hot tub a serious electrocution hazard.

Hot tub repairs cost between $200 and $500 on average. You can minimize those costs by maintaining your hot tub and keeping necessary supplies on hand. An elevated shelf in the garage is a great place to store your water care chemicals so that kids and pets will stay safe and you’ll always have them around.

Your hot tub should be drained of existing water, cleaned, and refilled every three to four months at a minimum. Follow your tub manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning, and rinse thoroughly when finished to eliminate any residue from the cleaning products. This is also a good time to inspect your tub’s cover in good lighting for any leaks, tears, or other damage that might cause problems.

Using your hot tub manufacturer’s suggested cleaners and methods, keep your hot tub filters clean to avoid a loss of water heat. This will help extend the filter’s useful life and efficiency. If the filter is more than two to three years old, replace it with a new one and buy a second filter to keep around as a spare.

A compact unit designed for two to three people typically weighs approximately 500 pounds in its empty state. On the other hand, a larger hot tub meant for up to six people can weigh around 1,000 pounds when empty. Materials used also impact weight. Less expensive hot tubs are typically lighter because they are made of molded plastic or fiberglass.

In most cases, it is safe to clean a hot tub with vinegar. You will want to verify that your hot tub manufacturer lists vinegar as a safe cleaning product; however, given that vinegar is chemical-free, cleans, deodorizes, and is safe for people and pets, it is usually a good option. You can use vinegar to clean the hot tub shell, interior and exterior spa surfaces, hot tub jets, hot tub filter, and other parts. It is considered a strong, safe, and natural cleanser that can kill bacteria, remove mold and mildew spores, erase water spots, and remove hard water stains.

Using bubble bath, bath oils, bath salts, or moisturizing products that contain butters or oils can damage your jetted tub. Because of the water pump and jet mechanism, you need to be more selective with products for a jetted tub than you would for a traditional bathtub in order to keep it functioning properly and avoid expensive repairs. These products also leave residue that can feed mildew and mold, so it’s best to avoid them.
