Start by checking the top or side edge of the door. Look for a certification label or metal tag stamped with details like the fire rating and information on the manufacturer. Even if it’s painted over, the tag should still be visible. Next, look along the edges for slim intumescent strips. They’re designed to swell up and seal gaps when exposed to heat. Finally, check if the door closes itself. Most fire doors have a self-closing mechanism, like an overhead closer or spring hinges. If none of these are obvious, contact a fire safety professional to help verify your door.

Their solid frame and ability to swing open provide a more secure structure than sliding doors, which rely on tracks that can wear down over time. French doors often come with multi-point locking systems and deadbolts, securing the door at multiple points and making them harder to break into. Of course, the door’s security also depends on factors like material quality, locking mechanisms, and proper installation—all of which ensure your door does its job of keeping your home safe.

For most doors, you can use a 1-inch chisel to create the mortise for the strike plate. In addition, you can use a 3/4-inch chisel for more refined cuts and to clean up the edges of your mortise. The smaller tool is handy when squaring off the edges around the hole for your latch.
