"Silva Tree Service did an amazing job. We are new home buyers and needed help with removing a large palm tree and trimming 3. He came out same day for a quote and was able to schedule service next day. He did a great job with covering my pool and jacuzzi and took great care with clean up and ensuring no damage. We were so impressed with his work and how fast he got it done we will be scheduling for annual service. A customer for life!"

They got to work on a palm tree that was pushing out my retaining wall. . were very efficient and left the area and surrounding neighbors yard very clean after they were done. I would and will hire them again for any of my tree trimming services."

"Robert Duran and his crew from 3-D Tree Services, Inc. were top notch today from the quote/survey to completion! I am amazed how quick, efficient, professional and kind this entire team is to work with! This was a tough job (Old/Invasive Pepper Tree). The crew was in sync with each other, allowing the process to be quick and safe. I’m so happy I found them through Home Advisor and the response to my inquiry was quick. Thank you everyone! Referrals will flow!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Before you cut down a dead palm tree, try to revive it using the methods listed above. However, there are instances when it makes sense to remove a dead palm tree, including:

  • The heavily infected tree will infect nearby trees, bushes, and plants.

  • The palm’s roots are overtaking your yard, foundation, and sidewalk and causing structural damage.

  • The tree is unstable and a hazard to your property, your neighbor’s property, and pedestrians.

A pro can guide you on the alternatives to tree topping depending on the specific issues within your trees. For example, if you’re dealing with breakage and cracks in your tree, they may suggest canopy reduction, which removes less than 25% of the tree’s limbs. If you’re dealing with lesser damage, some intentional pruning may be all you need. If you’re looking to get a clearer view through your tree, the pro may also try windowing or skirting your tree.

Most trees can be successfully transplanted while they are young, but pines, walnuts, and some oak tree varieties are more difficult to move because their root systems grow deeper than most other trees. Also, trees adapted to sandy soil with wide root systems like beeches, willows, and aspens are harder to dig out because their roots spread much farther out from the trunk. In these cases, unless the trees are very young and small, it’s a good idea to consult a tree planting professional.

Unfortunately, if you cut the top off a palm tree, it will die. Instead of budding or branching out, the top begins to slowly rot. That's why having a professional tree trimming at least twice a year is a good idea. If you don’t have experience with trimming your palm tree, you might accidentally cut the top off, leaving a dead and rotting tree in your wake.

You can use herbicides to prevent roots from growing without killing the tree itself, however they must be used with caution. Systemic herbicides are absorbed by the root and can kill off problematic roots. However, herbicides can sometimes negatively impact nearby plants, so the solution is best used sparingly.
