"Tiffany's crew is awesome. They did a large drywall project for us smoothing and removing a heavy drywall texture in 4 bedrooms. They were fast, efficient and did a beautiful job with our drywall. They even finished several days earlier than anticipated. I highly recommend Tiffany and her team. A+"

"They (specifically Isreal) was great in terms of what I view are honesty, work ethic, and workmanship. He kept me informed of all facets of the repair work and what was done wrong previously (I bought a townhome and I was not original owner, prior owner had work done to repair water damage to living ceiling and the source of the water was not only not fixed but the duct for the heating/air was damaged as well), he fixed the leak and the damaged duct (no charge). Only thing was that the original quoted price was a little high but given the quality of the work I would say it was worth it."

"JL drywall installed a ceiling with insulation in my master bedroom. It was a good experience working with Leo and his crew from the beginning to the end. Because it was a cathedral ceiling, I had special requirements for insulation and moisture control. Leo understood all my requirements and gave a really reasonable quote. During the project, at every major step, he either showed me in person or via pictures what they were doing so that I could verify no corner was cut. When I had questions or concerns, Leo answered and addressed them all. The project was done to my satisfaction. Just as important as the work quality, Leo was very responsive and punctual. He always responded when I called or texted him. The project was done in three separate days (because they needed to wait for mud or paint to dry). Leo always let me know when I could expect them. He and his crew showed up on time. Sometimes when there was delay due to traffic or other reasons, Leo would always let me know ahead of time how much the delay would be."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Whether to repair or replace water-damaged plaster depends on the scale of the damage. For small, limited areas, you can often perform a repair yourself. If you choose to paint over small patches, ensure the surface is completely dry and apply a coat of antifungal primer first to prevent mold growth. However, simply painting or plastering over the damage is only a temporary solution that doesn't address the core problem. For more extensive or long-term damage, the plaster may be compromised, and there is a risk of mold. In these cases, it is recommended to remove the damaged section of plasterboard and replace it. You may consider hiring a professional for the repair, and it's worth noting that water damage is often covered by home insurance.

Mudding drywall is a DIY-friendly project, but patience and practice are required for perfection. If you’re working in a highly visible area and want the best possible finish, hiring a professional drywaller is worth the cost. Pros have the tools and know-how to ensure a smooth surface with fewer sanding sessions and less cleanup.

The best way to make long, straight cuts is to use a utility knife and a T-square to score the sheet, snap along the score, and then finish the cut by cutting through the paper on the opposite side with the utility knife. If you’re making small cuts, curved cuts, or cutouts for electrical boxes or light fixtures, you can use a manual jab saw to keep costs down, but an electric spiral saw or oscillating multi-tool will get the cleanest, fastest cuts possible.

Although they have similar applications, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Their primary differences lie in their composition, consistency, and ideal use cases.

Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it thicker than joint compound. It dries quickly and is easy to sand, which makes it ideal for small wall repair projects like filling nail holes or patching minor damage.

Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.

Textured walls are a great way to hide imperfections left over by drywall installation, but many homeowners feel like it’s an outdated look, despite there being so many types of drywall texture. And while the textured walls of today are a far cry from the popcorn ceilings and faux stucco of our grandmother’s homes, if you want a more modern look or you want to install wallpaper, it’s time to smooth out your walls.
