"Larry from AllClear was great to work with!  We had AllClear remove asbestos transite siding from a home we're renovating. Larry was able to work within our strict time frame and had the job done quickly.  We felt the price was fair as well.  We'll definitely use them again!

"Very professional & communicative - kept us informed at each step of the repair. On time & worked hard. Played great music too. Joe was great with keeping in touch to schedule our job. He and his crew are very efficient. Joe found the roof leak that was missed by the last roofer who "repaired" it and took pictures to show us. I plan on hiring him for other issues we have in our old house."

"We have worked with Robert Cline on home improvement projects for at least 15 years. He is reliable, highly skilled, and his work is impeccable. He has done extensive siding replacements on our homes in Santa Ana and Altadena using fiber-cement products, including fire-hardening upgrades such as enclosed eaves and ember-proof vent installation. Robert is enjoyable to work with. He gets the job done efficiently and cleanly; his courteous team cleans up at the end of each day, minimizing impact on the job site. We highly recommend Robert Cline, First Rate Remodeling."

"They had to get my wooden side tables into the bedroom. It had to go around a wall that was blocking the entranceway. The bedroom suite was a family heirloom and everyone I spoke to said throw it out, until I met Cavalry. They were very clever in breaking it apart to get into the room and put screws in it so I could get it out again. After they put it back together they saw the floor was uneven and instead of ignoring it they raised it on a block to level it and attached it to the wall so it wouldn't fall on my head. They were very thorough and pleasant to deal with and made a real problem of mine disappear. Most of the carpenters I contacted wouldn't touch it. Bravo to them!"

"I hired Aerostar to do a full remodel of a town home including kitchen and three bathrooms. Lior and his team did a fantastic job. The craftsmanship is stunning and I am extremely happy with the end result. They also cleaned up every day before leaving the job side which I really appreciated. The quoted price was very reasonable and they finished the job in line with the quoted price. I highly recommend them and will definitely hire them for any future projects."

Siding questions, answered by experts

Yes, clapboard siding generally costs more compared to vinyl. The average cost for vinyl siding is between $2 and $7 per square foot. Meanwhile, clapboard siding costs $4 to $20 per square foot.

For the materials alone, a square of siding costs an average of $600, but prices can range from $100 to $3,000, depending on the material. Vinyl siding costs toward the lower end of that range, while real brick or stone siding costs closer to the higher end. Keep in mind that many boxes of siding contain two squares, enough to cover 200 square feet, so you may need to double your cost if you only need one square.

The lifespan of siding ranges from 20 to over 100 years, depending heavily on the material, climate, quality of installation, and maintenance.

  • Vinyl, Wood, and Aluminum: Typically last 20 to 40 years. Engineered wood may need replacement after just 20 years.

  • Fiber Cement: Lasts around 50 years.

  • Brick and Stone: These are the most durable, lasting for a century or more with proper care.

The longevity of any siding can be shortened if it's not properly maintained or if damage is not repaired promptly. Regular cleaning is vital. It's time for a replacement when you see widespread damage, signs of water intrusion, or a spike in energy costs.

Yes, mixing siding types will affect your home value, and in most cases, it will improve curb appeal and add to the value of your home. This is especially true if you get the benefit of the high-end appearance of brick or stone siding but save on siding costs by covering most of the exterior with more affordable vinyl or fiber cement.

Wood siding requires an air gap behind it to allow water to drain out, and for air circulation and venting to allow humid air to escape and keep the material from rotting due to moisture.
