Small hairline cracks in plaster walls are not serious and are mostly cosmetic, but larger or widespread cracks indicate structural problems that need repair. 

  • Cracks 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner: Cosmetic cracks you can repair if desired.

  • Cracks wider than 0.5 centimeters or widespread cracks: Structural repair is needed, either DIY or by a pro.

  • Cracks 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) or wider: Contact a plaster repair professional.

Watch for large, deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, and cracks along the walls where they meet the ceiling. Repair these cracks to prevent further damage.

Drying alone can take 1 to 4 hours to dry to the touch per plaster layer, but some types of plaster take several hours longer to dry. However, this doesn’t mean the job is done because plaster doesn’t fully harden until it cures, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks. It may take even longer if you’re building a new, pretty thick plaster wall. Allow the plaster to cure before painting it.

It is possible to repair plaster walls yourself, but it’s not always a good idea. Additionally, a professional’s plaster repair will very likely last longer than a DIY job, which means you could end up saving money over time by going with a pro from the start.

If you already have plaster walls and ceilings, adding new plaster costs $2 to $10 per square foot. For an average-sized room, that would come out to $1,200 to $10,000. However, the cost to replace plaster with drywall is higher—running between $720 and $1,250 for a 10-by-8-foot wall or ceiling (not including drywall finishing).

All plaster walls will crack over time with expansion and contraction from temperature and moisture changes, as well as from normal house settling. In these cases, the cracks will usually be thin and don’t mean there are major structural issues. However, excessive cracking, wide wall cracks, and cracks that span around corners can sometimes mean you have a foundation issue. Identifying severe problems is a key reason why hiring a professional for plaster repair is usually a good idea.
