"Ruben called backed promptly, listened to my potential leak and set up a appointment. Personal communication was great over the phone. My water meter usage and bill have been really high the last 2 months. He was here over 45 minutes and checked all toilets and assessed possible leaks. Found to be flush valve in upstairs toilet. Something I could fix myself. No charge for assessment and time. Will be next call if anything else comes up though."

"Can not imagine a better response, starting with my call for assistance, response time and how the technician, Tad methodically diagnosed the problem. We have an obscure kitchen fixture that required service in Feb 2019. Under warranty the problem was easily diagnosed by me, a problem possibly caused by me and a replacement part sent and installed by Albert Nahman team. Problem: I broke the faucet cartridge. Current Problem: restricted hot water flow in this kitchen sink only. Turns out the new cartridge part is now malfunctioning. I called and Tad arrived taking a step by step approach ruling out possible causes: a clog here or there, build up of sediment, or blockage in the lines or cartridge. The company that sells the product got on the phone with Tad and they collaborated on the problem and the tech person gave Tad one more thing to try. After the collaboration it is agreed, problem persisted and therefore that new cartridge part is now malfunctioning and will be shipped free of charge in two days. Thanks to all, who made this possible and I trust we will have Tad here again soon to finalize this fix. BTW, cost of service was less than expected given going rates for such a call lasting in excess of one hour. Another comment, spending time with Tad during the repair was a pleasure to have him explain, collaborate, listen and just chat. Questions on who to call next time, no question who I will call next time. I have read criticism of costs: In the Berkeley area "How much does it cost to hire a plumber? Some plumbers have a minimum fee for a service call. They might charge anywhere from $175-250 to come out and give you a consultation. Plumbers may give you a general service rate of $128-148 per hour when there are a lot of unknowns about a project and they aren't sure how long it will take. Some charge a flat rate for their plumbing services. For example, you may get charged $175 for a sink or drain cleaning, while toilet installation costs $500." Today costs are upfront, same as charges in Feb, $69 to arrive and assess the problem. Here in excess of one hour for $129 minus $25 coupon, total charge $173. I am ok and I expected these costs. If I was in Philly, where I grew up, I could call an uncle or cousin and get a better rate, a family rate. This is going rate for our area."

Small jobs welcome

"Wanted to charge $400 for a 30 minute plumbing fix on parts that I already supplied. My lawyer does not make that much per hour. After some haggling the price came down to $250 and it took him 20 minutes to complete work. Iâ m not a confrontational person by personality so I hated having to haggle with him, after I already payed $50 for them to quote. I really liked the pleasant person and end work product but because he quoted me an outlandish price out the gate, I will not be recommending them to anyone."

"Jesse came out 4 times in order to get the job done and he did an amazing job. He was punctual, helpful, gave great customer service, and really knew what he was doing. The first time Jesse tried to find our water leak and gave us a couple of estimates. The second time Jesse had a full schedule, but still came out before all of his other appointments. He dug where the leak was thought to be and marked off and showed me that the leak was close because you could see the water bubbling up. He explained he wouldn't dig anymore because he didn't want to cause the water to spray up into the yard and make the leak worse. We scheduled to have our leak fixed as soon as possible, right after Christmas and before New Year's. This is a busy time where some businesses sometimes have skeleton crews working or not all attention and work is put into the job, but this was not the case with Lee's Air. Jesse and his crew dug up the old pipe and replaced it with a very thick grade of PVC pipe and put our front yard back together in less than 2 days. They finished fixing and replacing the broken pipe and got our water back up and running at the end of the first day. Jesse even went through the house to check all of our sinks, toilets, and showers to make sure they were running properly. The second day they were there for about 4 hours making sure everything was working right in the front and putting the yard back together as nearly as they could. I was impressed with their work and they surpassed my expectations as far as putting the yard back together and cleaning up. They put our bushes that were dug up back in the correct spots and cleaned up and threw away part of another larger one I told them we were going to have taken out and re-landscaped anyways. The cement walkway was left fully intact and the dirt was put back and cleaned up very well. Don't hesitate to hire Lee's Air even if it is during a busy holiday season because they do quality work and have great employees like Jesse. Thank you Jesse!"

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Replacing a toilet costs between $275 and $480 in most cases, and the average cost sits around $375. This includes removing the old toilet and installing the new toilet. Your price could be significantly higher if you invest in a high-quality brand, need the replacement done on an emergency basis, or replace your toilet as a part of a larger bathroom remodel that demands additional work.

Yes, an ambitious homeowner could decide to replace their own toilet. A person attempting to do a DIY toilet installation should keep in mind that the average toilet weighs between 100 and 120 pounds. That means that you'll need to be comfortable lifting and carrying your old toilet and replacement toilet during both phases of the project. Additionally, homeowners will need to have basic plumbing knowledge to avoid plumbing problems that could result in messy, expensive water damage in their bathrooms. Hiring a plumbing pro from the get-go can help you avoid damaging your plumbing or your new toilet.

The cost to install a new toilet typically runs from $225 to $530. This doesn’t include the price of the toilet itself, which can cost $90 to $1,500 depending on the model and features you choose. You can save money if you choose to install a toilet yourself. However, you might want to hire a pro for this project.

"Due to the many complexities of replacing a toilet flange, it is typically a job best left to the pros," says Jeff Botelho, Angi Expert Review Board member and plumber. "Many times it isn't as simple and straightforward as 'pop off the old one and pop on a new one' because the flange is either glued on (PVC/ABS), soldered on (brass/copper), or caulked in place with a lead & oakum joint (cast iron) and none of these things can be easily reversed without years of training and repetitive practice."

The most practical and common setup is a toilet that connects with the sewer line or a septic tank. However, it is possible to install a toilet without a sewer line, and this can be particularly helpful in basements with no or outdated plumbing. An increasingly popular option is an environmentally friendly composting toilet. Other waterless options include incinerating or dry flush toilets, which pull the waste into an airtight container.

You can DIY your toilet flapper replacement if you’re up for a small plumbing project. Turn off the water to the toilet, open the tank lid, remove the chain from the lever, and unhook the flapper. For a new, adjustable flapper, adjust it to the right setting according to your toilet's gallons per flush rating. Hook the flapper in place and install the chain with 1/2 inch of slack.
