"We changed our oven from a free standing model to a slide in. The counter top was cut for the stove, and there was no backsplash behind the previous stove. We wanted a more built-in look with the new stove. Julie did a fabulous job. She tiled the wall behind the new stove and used a leftover piece of our solid countertop to fit all around the new stove - and even into a window inset. We couldn't have been happier with the result. She cared a lot about what she did and had really good suggestions. I wouldn't hesitate to hire her again for another job."

"They did a good job. We purchased the Angie's Deal for new granite countertops for $1499. Of course we ended up choosing a higher priced granite, needing more granite square footage than the deal covered, and upgrading the sink for additional cost. They also needed to move up the electrical outlets to accommodate for the new 6 inch granite backsplash. Bryan and his team did the entire job in 2 days and were great. One thing to mention is that they do not hook back up the sink after the job. They were very clear about that in their estimate. We called a separate plumber for that the next day. Overall, very happy with my counters. Now if someone else would just do the cooking in there!"

Small jobs welcome

"Very professional start to finish. Received a quick detailed estimate, and scheduling and service were also very promptà ¢à  à ¦speedy in fact. Our countertops look fabulous, exceeding expectations. Ità ¢à  à  s difficult to find someone to do this work, and I had my doubts about using a company I found on the internet. But we are so glad we took the chance on Surface Link because they did a perfect job. It is Hard to find a contractor we can say that about todayà ¢à  à ¦. We are often disappointed. Not with this company. Or this technician (Steve ) who is a pro at this. Time will tell, but as of today, we are thrilled."

"We were referred Bianco at San Diego Rocktops when we met with a cabinetmaker to stain our cabinets. Thank goodness for that referral because Bianco and his team were amazing! When Bianco came to discuss what we wanted to do, we were unsure if we should have the granite installed before or after we stained the cabinets, and he informed us that granite should be done prior to staining. He gave us names of a few granite places he works with regularly for us to check out. We went to the business that was the closest, and they had an amazing selection and staff to match (Brazilian Exotic Granite in San Marcos). We picked out the granite slabs (Bianco said we would need 2), paid for them, and let Bianco know they were ready to be picked up (per his request). He didn't charge for pickup of the slabs, which was really nice. His demo team came in to get rid of our tile countertop, backsplash, and old range and sink. They cleaned up after themselves well and then they installed plywood countertops until the granite was cut and placed. The granite was to be installed and completed within one day, but the granite install team arrived a few hours after the window Bianco gave us (which was a pain for my husband, who took the day off to be at home) and let us know that because they arrived late (they said they were overbooked), the installation would take two days. I learned the hard way to double the time any contractor says something will take - because I have a five-month-old, I had to keep him out of the house for half of the first day due to the noise level of the saw that cuts the granite. San Diego Rocktops still gets an A in my book because when they had to cut the hole for the cooktop, they hustled and I only had to be out of the house with my son for an hour. While Bianco did say they could install our new range, when the day came Bianco said his insurance company wouldn't let him do it (so we had to get a handyman to install it). Bianco let me know that because we chose a super-porous light-colored granite (that would have been nice to know we would have to be anal about keeping it clean, Brazilian Exotic Granite!), we'd have to be really on top of re-sealing the granite every month, or we could purchase from them a high-quality sealant that would last 20 years (for $200). He insisted he wasn't trying to upsell us and it was our decision, but with a baby I knew I wouldn't be re-sealing the countertop anytime soon! Even after the terrible fires, Bianco himself came to put on the sealant, and he was still evacuated from his home! Talk about amazing customer service. We still have half a container of the sealant left. He also removed and disposed of our old hood, which was really great. Would recommend him to anyone, and if we re-do our master bath, he will be the first guy we call!"

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

Yes, installing new quartz countertops can increase your home’s value. Updating your counters with a durable material like quartz that will last decades is a great investment.

Butcher block countertops typically last around 20 years, and sometimes longer, with proper maintenance. This lifespan is comparable to granite and longer than laminate. Key maintenance tasks include regular cleaning after every use and resealing, ideally once a month. You can also sand and resurface the countertops to remove imperfections like deep scratches, stains, dings, and scorch marks. The longevity is also affected by the thickness of the wood strips used in its construction; thicker strips are generally more durable.

Quartzite is more expensive than granite, largely because of its rarity. Granite is naturally more common. A granite slab generally costs $40 to $60 per square foot (excluding super-rare types), while quartzite slabs cost anywhere from $50 to $150 per square foot.

With both materials, it’s usually more affordable to purchase stones that are readily available in your location. You may need to import other stones, which come at a higher cost.

Tile countertops can be an excellent and budget-friendly option for a kitchen, provided they are installed correctly. It's important to choose tiles, such as ceramic, that are heat-, water-, and scratch-resistant. When the grout is properly sealed, it will resist stains, making the surface easy to clean. Tile is also considered a sustainable material. For a cohesive kitchen design and added protection, you can pair a tile countertop with a matching tile backsplash.

The angle at which you cut countertops depends on the material, your intended outcome, and the location of the cut. For example, rather than cutting a straight 90-degree angle for internal corners, cut edges at a 45-degree angle to give a clean, professional look. For outside edges, most homeowners want squared-off sides, so 90-degree angles can make the most sense there. Because you want to get angles exactly right to minimize seams and eliminate the need for patching, be sure to measure several times before cutting and use the right equipment to get sharp, accurate angles.
