"I hired Dinh to remodel my two-car garage, and I couldn't be happier with the results. The project included adding a ceiling, repairing walls, installing new flooring, and doing electrical and plumbing work, among other things. The transformation is amazingâ my garage looks brand new and shiny! The new ceiling also provides crawl space for extra storage, and I love how versatile the garage is now. It can easily be converted into a home office or gym. Dinhâ s craftsmanship is solid, and the pricing is very competitive. I highly recommend his services!"

"We obtained estimates from over 10 contractors for this job. Brian was very reasonably priced. We needed a deck specialist to modify an existing deck. Brian has extensive experience building decks. He handled our fairly complicated project with skill and competence. He lived up to every commitment he made. He was always on time, always responded to messages and phone calls. We love our new deck and highly recommend Brian."

"The job included prepping and painting my 1400 sq ft home and picket fence. It also included demo-ing the old window boxes that were structurally built into the walls, and custom-building new ones. In addition, a garden shed that had been built onto the back of my home was also demolished. Ivan was great to work with - very collaborative and responsive and has a good eye for esthetics. The work was exceptionally high quality. The team shows up early and works hard. It was also super-convenient that Ivan is licensed in carpentry as I didn't have to deal with custom window-boxes as a separate project. Last note is that as a single woman, it is important to me to feel comfortable with the people around my home. Ivan's team, including his wife who is often onsite, are so friendly and always respectful. They will be my go-to for all future projects."

"Richard documented and itemized the work to be done in a good quote. This made it easy for me to select the priority services I wanted. While I bought the replacement door, Richard was helpful advising me what door to select, and an efficient Home Depot to get it at. Richard was patient while inspecting the work to be done, and explaining what was need. Richard began in a timely fashion, and worked with my schedule. i am very happy with the resulting door installation."

"I needed an arbor painted. We had it built about 3 years ago but the staining had faded. I bought the Tool Time big deal coupon for $350.00 for 4 hours of work. I purchased the deal early March, but had to email the company several times to actually start the job. It was finally completed in May. Spoke with Eric the owner over the phone but only met the painter in person. The painter stated that the arbor would need to be washed and primed and I agreed. We bought the materials like paint and primer. Was happy with the results. Didn't here from the company till August. For some reason, they were using an old email address instead of the one we were previously using to communicate. They did not try to communicate with me through Angie's list till 8/15. When I finally got the invoice, I was shocked to learn that they were asking $1500.00 for the job, which is more than I paid to have the arbor built, and about four times the amount of the initial deal. Eric's wife and I got into a heated, shouting argument over the cost. She states it cost that much because after the 4 hours, they were charging me their hourly rate. But come on! Over 24 hours of work to wash and paint an arbor? It didn't take that much time to build it. It ended with her request to email them with what I think is a fair price. I replied with an email stating that I would pay &800.oo on top of the the original price of the deal. That was in August and still haven't received a response. Seveal things went wrong with working with this company, maybe because it was a small job, there was not adequate communication going on. I wasn't given a quote verbal or written prior to the start of the job.

"We hired Bayside Builders to do our home renovation project because we needed some help with designing and building a new outdoor fireplace. They were able to come up with an impressive design, plus they did such a great job with the construction! The pergolas they built for us are doing wonders in keeping the backyard cool- we love them! We would definitely recommend this company as they provide high quality service at very reasonable prices."

"The job was to remove a stump by hand in a restricted space. Genaro arrived on time and performed work in a surprisingly short time. Preserved and reinstalled the decomposed granite that surrounded the stump after adding fill dirt to make the area level. Excellent work."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Stick frames, metal frames, or prefabricated concrete frames are included in framing a house, along with creating the framework and space for windows, doors, and entryways. Other aspects of developing a home—like drywall, insulation, windows, doors, and more—are not included in the cost to frame a house.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.
