"AWS was amazing! From the start, the initial consultation was prompt and informative and well detailed. To scheduling our service earlier than expected, they truly work with our urgency for the installation. Our service man Tim was on time and explained the work he was going to complete. Although there were a few hiccups along the way, he made it all work. We are completely excited for our new water softener, reverse osmosis system, and faucet they installed in our brand new home."

"Fluid Mechanics arrived at my home shortly after we spoke ( I had a failure in my water softener system) . I appreciate that he was able to come out quite quickly to take a look at my system. He ended up recommending a far superior system at a reasonable price, and installed it promptly. Very knowledgeable, super nice guy and I can heartily recommend for any plumbing needs."

"On July 19, 2019 Richco repaired a corroded water inlet pipe where it enters through a stucco wall. This included replacing pipe in the wall and shut-off valves for a nearby sink. New supply hoses were included. The technician, Fernando, produced excellent results to my complete satisfaction."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

No, hard water isn’t dangerous. The added calcium in hard water can contribute to good bone health. However, it can also cause dry skin and hair. If you have dry skin or hair, consider using a water-softening system to help minimize the minerals in your water. Plus, these systems can also add some sodium to your diet.

A lower-end water softener would cost around $900, not including installation. Each home has different requirements, water hardness, and number of inhabitants, so there’s a huge range in pricing—$600 to over $6,000. The average water softener repair bill is around $500, meaning it’s a much better option to repair any issues and only replace your softener if absolutely necessary.

The most accurate way to determine whether you have hard water is to purchase a water test kit from a hardware store or send a tap water sample to a lab. But there are some signs you can look out for without professional testing. For instance, if you're consistently dealing with mineral stains on your glassware, windows, and shower doors, you're likely to have hard water. Hard water can also make it harder to lather and rinse soap, so if you're struggling to work up a good lather in the shower, hard water might be the culprit.

There are several things that can shorten the life of a water softener. Homes with very hard water may have to replace the unit sooner because the water softener works harder to filter out the hard minerals. High water usage and infrequent maintenance can also put more strain on a water softener.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.
