Your outdoor unit houses your condenser coils, fan, and compressor. Your indoor unit houses your evaporator coils, drain lines, and filter, and it connects to your ductwork. 

There are a few reasons your AC is running but not cooling your room. Thermostat issues and dust and debris, which can clog your system, are common problems. It could also be a broken component, such as a compressor, blower fan, or evaporator coils. You’ll need to call a pro to diagnose the issue.

While most air conditioners can last between 10 and 20 years, they will only last this long (or longer) if properly taken care of. Routine maintenance and inspections help keep your AC unit running in tip-top shape but understanding what factors will decrease its lifespan will also help keep your unit running cool.

Some things that shorten your AC’s lifespan include:

  • Extreme outdoor conditions, like high humidity or extensive salt spray

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances. 

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

An air conditioner’s watt usage depends on multiple factors, including the type of AC unit, its size, and how often you use it. With that said, most central air conditioners consume between 3,000 and 3,500 watts. Meanwhile, window AC units use 900 to 1,400 watts, and portable air conditioners consume 2,900 to 4,100 watts.
