Small jobs welcome

"I have been working with Paul and I would highly recommend him to anyone! I have had him done a lot of other projects for me besides painting. I have had bad luck with handymen before so I was hesitant to hire him but he has proven to be a great handyman and always provided great quality work. Even now he is working on something for me."

"It went great. We were really on a tight spot, we were going to buy our house and we're planning to put a roof on the house. He gave a great quote. He had it done in 3 days which was great. He lost a little bit of money on us but he still did a great job. The staff was great, any issues we had, they took care of it right away. They cleaned up well after themselves. He was in constant contact with me if we had any issues, when the guys are going to be there or leaving. He came over and checked the site several times and they had great customer service."

"When I first met Matt I had a great feeling about him. So much so I cancelled all other estimates. He met my expectations and then some. The job turned out fantastic! He's a young ambitious young man and did a great job. He completed the work on time and I would definitely hire him again."

"I am very fortunate to have Andrew of Slender and Sons up on my roof. I had a misfortunate problem with a NEW one year old foam roof. The owner of the Camp Verde foam roofing company did a proper job when foaming the deck (floor) of the roof. The problem arose when he sent his employes out to finish the job foaming the parapet wall and parapet top. It was below average workmanship. When Andrew showed me the photos of the work done I sunk into a dark despair. This is my forever home and I need it to function properly. I called Andrew after the camp verde 10 year warranty did not even return a phone call to me after four times of calling. Andrew resounded promptly. I was very gun shy and did not trust anyone after what I saw in the roof photos Andrew took. Andrew explained what was done properly and what wasn't done properly and how he can rectify the situation. There was much to correct and picture do not lie! He was up on the roof for most of the day restructuring the roof inadequacies. If a roof does not function properly the whole house is worthless. When he finished and showed me the photos of his work I was very pleased. He knew the best approach to strengthen and restore a weak roof. I now feel protected from strong Arizona weather elements. I am relaxed to know I can count on Andrew. Wooh! I feel like I ran a marathon to have the roof redone properly before the monsoons set in heavily. Thank you Andrew and sons. Miss Hawk in Sedona"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Pea-sized hail can damage a roof if it experiences hailstorms often, as it slowly causes cracks and deterioration to your shingles. Usually, one hailstorm with pea-sized hail won’t damage your roof, but if you see other damage to your car, grill, and other property, it may be worthwhile to get in touch with your insurance company and have a local roofer come out for an inspection.

If your roof has storm damage, there will be some telltale signs. These include missing, loose, or damaged shingles. You may notice cracks or dents on the metal parts of your roof, like flashing, gutters, or metal panels. Water leaks are another big indicator. So are visible signs of impact. Rather than climb up on your roof to check, hire a professional to inspect the area  safely.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, wood shakes and wood shingles have notable differences, primarily in their manufacturing and appearance. Wood shingles are machine-cut on both sides, resulting in a smooth, thin, and uniform product. In contrast, wood shakes are typically hand-split or sawed on only one side, giving them a more textured, natural, and rustic appearance. Due to these manufacturing differences, shakes are generally thicker, heavier, and less uniform than shingles. They are also more expensive. Homeowners seeking a more rustic aesthetic often choose shakes, while those preferring a more uniform look may opt for shingles. Both are installed in an overlapping pattern to create a durable, weather-resistant roof.

Furring strips (also called wood stripping) are not always necessary for a metal roof installation, but they are highly recommended and may be required by local building codes or the roofing manufacturer's specifications. There are several key reasons to use them:

  • Energy Efficiency: Furring strips, made of wood or metal, create an air gap between the metal panels and the roof deck. This acts as a thermal break, reducing heat transfer into your home and improving overall energy efficiency.

  • Moisture and Condensation Control: The air gap allows for better airflow, which helps prevent moisture buildup and condensation under the metal panels.

  • Structural Support: They provide a solid, even frame to which you can attach the metal roofing panels.

It is especially important to use furring strips when installing a metal roof over existing shingles. Without them, the roof surface can be uneven, and you will experience greater solar heat gain.

Roofers don’t typically replace vent pipes themselves, but they do handle the flashing and seals around vent pipes when working on a roof. During a roof replacement or repair, roofers inspect the vent pipe flashing for damage, replace deteriorated seals, and ensure the pipe is properly integrated into the roofing system to prevent leaks. If the vent pipe itself is cracked or damaged, a plumber is usually required to replace it, while the roofer ensures the roofing components around the pipe remain watertight.
