"This wasn’t my first phone call. My first phone call I was greeted by a nice and professional receptionist who made an appointment to get a free estimate. When Ivan called, the first question he asked me was what year my house was built when I explained I wanted old popcorn ceiling removed. I was very impressed since I had read homes built in the 80s were needing to be tested for asbestos prior to popcorn removal and we had that done already. Thankfully our home was asbestos free. The knowledge shown from the first sentence and I was sold! They were on time and finished the same day as we needed. The job was labor intensive and my appreciation and thanks to the two employees who worked hard and did an absolutely amazing job. I’m sorry I did not take any before and after photos. I will be using this company again!"

He taught both young men and women construction skills thru job training programs when he was a contractor for the Tucson Urban League and also when he worked for the Arizona Conservation Corps. He has always been strongly motivated to help people in need and give back to his community. He started Straw Dogs Construction in 1997 after building a straw bale home in conjunction with the Urban League and Habitat for Humanity. He built the Straw bale home pictured here in Oracle, Arizona in 1998. There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Costs depend on material type, labor rates, and additional features like decorative finishes or reinforcement.

Drywall anchors aren’t necessary if there’s a stud behind the wall where you’ll be working. Studs are strong enough to support screws on their own, but they don’t run throughout the wall. If you’re doing a project that involves the entire wall and not just one part (like hanging a small painting or photo), odds are you’ll need drywall anchors at some point in the process. 

Whether it’s better to screw or glue drywall depends on your specific budget and project timeline. Professional drywall installers are more likely to use screws and fasteners than adhesives, but it takes longer. But if you are DIYing your drywall installation, glue is a perfectly fine choice if you’re willing to pay extra for adhesive.

While you can put new drywall over old drywall, it’s not always the best option. In some cases, drywalling over drywall can make it harder to find wires and pipes behind your walls and conceal more serious problems with your walls. It can also make the room smaller. On the plus side, putting drywall over drywall can improve soundproofing and insulation. Plus, it’s often less expensive than tearing down and adding new drywall.
