An AC compressor is one of the most expensive parts to replace on an AC unit if it breaks. You’ll pay up to $2,300 if you need a new one. If your AC is blowing warm air, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of air coming out of the ducts at all, or the unit cycles on and off a lot, you may have a broken compressor. You may never need an AC recharge if there are no leaks. However, if your AC unit has a leak that cannot be patched appropriately, you’ll need an AC recharge every time the freon level drops low enough that it disrupts your system—this could be once every two to three years. It all depends on the size and frequency of the leak.

Swamp coolers cost approximately 50 percent less to install than central air conditioners and cost less to run. Operation costs depend on the size of the unit and home, your climate, utility rates in your area, and the system’s efficiency. Swamp coolers use 15 to 35 percent less power than air conditioners.

A home AC unit provides anywhere from one-half to five tons of cooling and requires approximately two to four pounds of refrigerant per ton of cooling. At approximately five to 10 minutes to fill one pound of refrigerant, a home that requires three tons of cooling will take about six to 12 pounds of refrigerant and approximately 30 minutes to two hours to completely recharge the unit.

You’re getting higher electricity bills.
Your home doesn’t feel as cool as it usually does.
Your AC unit is running longer than usual to cool your home.
Your home is more humid than usual.
The coil is covered in frost while running.
