Cinnamon's warm scent appeals to many people but not to many bugs. The spice contains eugenol, which also happens to be used in insecticides. While the level of eugenol in cinnamon isn't enough to eliminate bugs on its own, the scent can be strong enough to keep them away. 

You can try sprinkling cinnamon around areas where you've seen insects, such as ants and mosquitos. Remember that you'll have to reapply frequently, especially after periods of rain.

Ant and termite infestations look very different. Since termites feed on wood, one of the warning signs of their presence is drooping drywall, peeling paint, loose floor tiles, and crumbling wood. On the other hand, ants feed on plant- and animal-based food options, so you’ll likely spot a colony near your home’s food sources. If you’re unsure what type of pest infestation you have, hire a pest control specialist to inspect for you.

Scientists have found that the chemical traces a dying wasp releases can agitate nearby wasps and make them more aggressive. It may not necessarily attract wasps, but it will make wasps in the area more likely to investigate and feel threatened, which leads to more stings. While possums don’t typically carry rabies, they can have lice, fleas, ticks, and mites. According to the University of California’s Pest Management Program, possums can also carry diseases like leptospirosis, tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, and fevers. Possums are also the carriers of a parasite that can pass to horses and cats called Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM).

Rats are the most active at night, from late evening through the early morning. These nocturnal creatures forage for food and explore their surroundings in the dark, when it's quieter and there's less human activity. You're less likely to see them during daylight hours, as they usually stay hidden in walls, attics, or other secluded areas. Spotting signs like droppings or gnaw marks is often the first indication of their presence, rather than seeing the rodents themselves.
