8/4/14 - They visited the house and informed me that they could do the work. I was told they would have to bring an electrician and once they got a date set up with an electrician they would come and do the work. 8/19/14 - I had still not heard back from them so I gave them a call. I was told they had just been really busy but would be out in to do the job in a day or two. I was not given a reason on why they never called me back. 9/16/14 - I have decided to move on from this company and find someone who can follow through on their promises. I'm not sure why they never called me back or made false promises. I will never attempt to do business with this company again, and I would never recommend them. He arrived promptly for the appt., was pleasant and seemed professional. When he gave me an estimate, I asked for it in writing and he told me he usually just did a handshake agreement. This should have been my red flag. I did insist on a written agreement. He returned with a sloppy handwritten estimate. Insurance only paid $2600 for the interior damage. The total cost was approx. $7600. I was out of pocket $5000. I gave Mr. Merritt the money up front for the materials. During the repair process, he asked for money to pay his employees, which I gave him. The work was completed in a timely manner, except for some finishing work on the ceiling inside. He told me he would return to finish that, which he never did. He left his supplies as if he were returning soon. He never finished. I called him and asked when he was going to return to finish. He told me he was finished. I reminded him about the ceiling and he told me he forgot. He had already moved on to another job, but would return to finish. He never did. About two months later, the roof started leaking again. I called Mr. Merritt to let him know. He came out and spread some sealant on the seams, but it continued to leak. I called again. He said he would return and never did. He then stopped answering my calls, nor did he return them. I had to get my husband to call from his phone. Mr. Merritt answered his call because he didn't recognize the number. I got on the phone and had a heated discussion with Mr. Merritt. He promised me he would make things right. I did not hear from Mr. Merritt for a year and a half even after numerous attempts to contact him. He finally came by to assess the problem but never returned. That was the last contact with Mr. Merritt we have had. I have tried to contact him but to no avail. Now the leaks are worse than before he attempted the repair. Totally disgusted with the experience with Mr. Merritt. Now I have no other options but to take legal action. Mr. Larry Brooks and AlaTech Home Inspection Service was the only inspector I could find to service my area. He had to drive around 3 hours to my location but he was happy to do so. It only cost $350 for a full inspection and it was well worth it. He inspected the outside, inside, crawl space, attic, and all electrical, plumbing, and heating/air. It took him around 2 hours for the inspection and he sat down with me for around 30 minutes and told me everything he found, how to fix it, and what the cost may be. FAQs for heating oil service projects in Muscle Shoals, AL
To buy heating oil for your house, contact local heating oil companies to compare prices and place an order once you decide on a supplier. The company will have to deliver your heating oil in a truck designed to carry and dispense heating oil safely. Call and order your heating oil early enough to have your oil delivered before you need to start using it for home heating.
On average, you’ll need about two gallons of oil per day to heat your house when it’s 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Most oil tank capacity is about 275 gallons, and heating your house with two gallons of oil per day will last about four and a half months. This consumption will vary depending on the climate and average temperature in your location. For example, if the winters are longer and colder where you live, you’ll probably need to refill your oil tank at least once to get through the winter.
You save money on heating oil in a few ways:
Make sure your home is well insulated and sealed against drafts and heat leakage.
Use a thermostat that’s working properly and calibrated accurately.
Program your thermostat to lower the heat when you’re not home.
Order heating oil during the off-season when prices are likely to be lower.
Summer months tend to be when heating oil prices are lowest because of decreased demand. Buying heating oil during the off-season also prepares you for when the weather gets cold, and you need to start using the oil to heat your home. Although heating oil prices will fluctuate, it’s best to avoid purchasing between September and April, as that's the peak season for heating oil demand.
Overall, heating your home with an oil furnace tends to be less expensive than heating your home with an electric heating system. Oil heating systems stay warm for longer periods of time without drawing a constant electrical current to maintain a temperature. Plus, heating oil systems typically have a longer lifespan and lower price tag than their electrical counterparts, resulting in short- and long-term savings.
