"Ruben came out to timely and assessed the project. He was able to submit a detailed fair quote to me by the end of the day. After work began he found damage to the roof which needed to be repaired before completion of the drywall project. He and his team worked nonstop to address the roof leak as we were expecting a big rain in the following days. I have been pleased with the outcome of job done! The ceiling looks great and I have not observed any leaks. A very good team of workers! Thank you guys. I would definitely use in the future for other projects."

Mark’s Drywall Repair & Painting specializes in small-to-medium drywall repairs, interior painting, and detailed surface preparation throughout the Birmingham area. I handle drywall holes, cracks, damaged areas, skim coating, sanding, priming, and painting, with an emphasis on getting the surface and finish right—not simply covering up the damage.\n\nMy background includes decades of hands-on experience with painting and surface finishing, including automotive finishing, where preparation and attention to detail are everything. I bring that same approach into your home.\n\nSmall jobs are always welcome. I focus on clean, careful work, straightforward communication, and leaving your home cleaner than I found it. Whether you need one damaged wall repaired, a room repainted, doors and trim refreshed, or a surface corrected before painting, I’m happy to help.

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Beadboard is a decorative element and lacks the structural integrity of drywall. It cannot hold much weight and is not meant to be used as an insulator or moisture barrier, like drywall is. In almost all cases, beadboard is placed over an existing wall surface which, in modern days, is usually drywall, but decades ago could have been wood paneling.

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.

You should stagger drywall sheets to help prevent cracking. The joints between drywall sheets are the weak spots, so if you install drywall with seams aligned, you’ll create weak lines that run across the length of the wall and extend from floor to ceiling. But when you stagger drywall, the solid sections of panels will support the joints. This can prevent seams from cracking or separating due to fluctuating temperature and humidity, vibrations from movement inside the home, and gravity.

You should always hang drywall from the top down. Starting at the top makes it easier to create a straight, tight line between the ceiling and the wall. Any gaps that occur will be at the bottom, where they are easier to manage. You can either cut the bottom piece of drywall to fit the remaining space or cover the gap with baseboard trim. Additionally, starting at the top is physically easier, as you won't have to fit the top sheet into a tight space between the lower sheet and the ceiling, or try to balance the upper sheets on the lower ones while securing them.

You should start looking for a drywall installer by choosing a local company with positive online reviews and ratings with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Next, confirm that the professional is properly licensed using Angi’s contractor licensing tool, and ask the installer if they are fully insured. It’s a good idea to ask for recent customer references and call them to get their honest opinion about the contractor and their work. You can also ask the installer if they guarantee their work or provide a workmanship warranty.
