"The guys cleared a large tract of land for me opening up roads and green fields on some hunting property. They were very responsive and did great work. Property was night and day different when they were done. Before I could barely get a vehicle around the property. Now I can get my truck down the roads with room to spare. Very happy overall with work done."

"They did a great job when they came out and installed the fence Everything looked great and it was done in a timely fashion. My fence looks so good even a couple of my neighbors complemented us on it. The price was very affordable and we didn't feel like we were being taken advantage of. "I had a gas line installed at my house and asked them about sump grinding. They said Matthew & Joey Tree Service and several other companies.  I went in and checked Angies List and they were 1st on the list of two. Called them, they were here in less than 10 minutes, gave me a good price and the stump was gone. Total time from being told about them to job finished was about 30 minutes. Can't beat that. Fast, good job, good price. I'll use them again.

Small jobs welcome

I am a current senior at Auburn university, in the building science program. I recently did an internship in Charleston SC installing landscapes, hardscape, and irrigation. I am looking for small jobs that will allow me to get a business off the ground and gain experience at the same time.

Excavating questions, answered by experts

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

To drill a shallow well, you may be able to use a drive well point. This is a tapered point that is driven into the ground. A drill bit at the end of PVC pipe may be another option to consider. A lot of the cost depends on what tools are available near you.

There are several different factors that influence how long it takes to excavate. For a foundation, it could take anywhere from three days to three weeks. It can take even longer if you face weather-related delays or an inaccessible site that’s riddled with boulders and rough terrain. It may also take longer if you have clay soil, which is more difficult to dig.

If you don’t have a crawl space but have a partial basement you want to make deeper, you can expect to spend a little less—between $40,000 and $90,000 on average. However, if you’re not adding new finished square footage, you won’t see much in the way of ROI.

In the United States, a depth of 36 inches (three feet) for underground water lines is the accepted industry standard. This depth varies from location to location based on local conditions. In areas with colder winters, they may be buried deeper to prevent frozen well water pipes : This is usually at least six inches below the frost level. The International Plumbing Code calls for a minimum of 12 inches below grade.
