Since 1978 Porters has been helping Wyoming residents furnish their homes with the industries leading fireplaces, hot tubs, spas, stoves, BBQ grills, Satellite TVs and HDTVs.

"We purchased a fireplace from Porter’s in Casper and signed a contract in August 2020 for $5,932.00. We put down $3,000.00 so had a balance of $2932.00. In early September, I spoke with the manager regarding installation and was told I had a balance of $4,353.00 which, less the deposit of $3,000.00, left a balance of $1,353.00. I presumed the new balance was the result of a promotion of some kind. One should never presume. I called later in September and asked for a final billing statement. I received a billing statement in October for the $1,353.00 and sent a payment for that amount. In January 2021, I received a bill for $2,782.00. I called and was told that additional charges had been posted, ones from the original contract that had never been billed, and that the balance was $1,429.00, not $2,782.00. I asked why these charges were not on the final bill I had requested and why would they post charges months after the date of service. After some discussion, I suggested that some form of credit should be applied given they have not once sent a correct bill. I was given $120.00 off. I was furious with them and asked again for a final bill that was itemized with all charges and payments. I was assured it would be sent. I finally received a bill 4 weeks later with nothing on it but a balance due. It doesn’t make me proud to say that they wore me down and so I paid it. I may file a report with the Better Business Bureau but for now, I’ve elected to write this review. If you go there, I highly recommend their products and installers but, watch the billing. They clearly aren’t on top of it. Chris N."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should seal an unused chimney. Even if it’s not in use, the structure is still susceptible to moisture damage, which can lead to problems like cracks, spalling, efflorescence, and damaged mortar joints. But you should also cap the chimney to prevent blockages while still allowing for air ventilation (which also prevents moisture damage). Also, continue to get an annual chimney inspection to prevent other issues with the structure.

If you have a chimney, you need a flue or chimney cap. The right covering keeps rain, debris, and animals from getting into your flue or chimney and causing damage. A flue or chimney cap also provides fire protection. The mesh insert around the cap keeps sparks from flying out of the chimney and igniting leaves and other materials.

Costs depend on the fireplace model, venting complexity, labor, and whether additional structural modifications are needed.

Running a gas fireplace is potentially cheaper than using central heating if you are heating a single room and don’t need to heat the entire house. That's because gas fireplaces are a better source of direct heat, making them more efficient for warming small spaces. Central heating, while more efficient for whole-home warmth, uses more energy overall. Strategically using a gas fireplace, therefore, can help lower heating bills.

No. Pellet stoves are specifically designed to burn manufactured wood or biomass pellets. Attempting to burn other materials, such as regular firewood or paper products, can damage the stove, compromise its efficiency, and even pose safety hazards due to inconsistent combustion and increased emissions. It's crucial to follow manufacturer guidelines and only use pellets that are specifically recommended for your pellet stove model to ensure safe and optimal performance over its life span.
