"The excavation went very well. Very knowledgeable and performed to perfection . Showed up on time or early when he said he would. Took it upon himself to go above and beyond what was expected. Very reliable and great to work with. I would not hesitate to use his services again."

"They did an amazing job! A sinkhole formed after a utility did some work near my driveway (along with other damage they caused on a separate occasion). Also, the driveway was less than 3 years old and was sinking near the garage due to poor installation by the builders of the house. RoadMax came out to give me a free estimate and explained everything very clearly. They even honored the quote even after 8 months of waiting for the utility to agree to pay for the damage. Their willingness to contact the utility company on my behalf really helped resolve the issue. The new driveway is perfect and looks great! The workers were very professional and did a great job. RoadMax will be my go-to paving company going forward. Highly recommend! I just wish I had some better before pictures to demonstrate the transformation."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

You must sign off on local grading and septic permits before excavating begins in Berkeley Springs. You are also responsible for choosing equipment access routes and deciding which trees to remove. On sloped lots, you must determine the direction of water runoff to protect neighboring properties. Finally, you or your contractor must initiate the mandatory state utility marking call.

Helpful?

After completing excavating, you must monitor sloped areas for soil erosion, especially during heavy spring rains in WV. Inspect drainage channels and swales seasonally to clear out sediment and debris. Check excavated areas for signs of soil settling or subsidence due to the local limestone bedrock. Finally, inspect cut slopes and retaining walls for structural shifts after winter frost heave.

Helpful?

Excavating projects in Berkeley Springs take one to ten days of active work, depending on the specific job. Hitting shallow limestone bedrock extends a standard one-day dig to three or five days. You must also account for mandatory utility marking, which takes three business days, and local permit processing, which adds one to three weeks to your total timeline.

Helpful?

Completing excavating in Berkeley Springs provides immediate protection for your foundation by upgrading drainage on hilly terrain. Proper grading directs water away from your home, preventing hillside erosion and groundwater intrusion common in this karst limestone region. Over the long term, this work prevents structural damage from severe winter freeze-thaw cycles and increases your usable property space.

Helpful?

Excavating near your home alters soil pressure against older stone foundations and basement walls. Digging also risks cutting into unmapped private utility lines, septic drain fields, and well water casings. A licensed professional will assess your property to maintain mandatory WV setback distances from wells and natural springs. They will also manage equipment vibrations to protect nearby driveways and outbuildings.
