"Joe and his son were great to work with. He responded very quickly to my call and came right on time. The job went very well and he provided some great advice for maintaining the heater going forward. Really enjoyed working with Joe and would hire him again in the future."

"

We had our water heater go out last week.  We noticed it when we woke up to take showers before work.  I called a few places and ultimately chose to go with Harker because the receptionist told me they would be able to come out and assess the heater and replace it the same day.  Our water heater is about 7 years old, so we figured there would be a good chance that it would cost the same amount the replace the water heater as to just fix the older one, so that is why I verified with her that they could fix it the same day.

We have a new rescue dog that is not good around men, so my SO came home from work (I had already taken the day off work for this) and she took the dog away from the house so we didn?t disturb the men while they worked.  As we expected, there were a few parts that were bad on the water heater and the cost would be similar to repair or to replace.  He was done looking at the water around 2:00 and he told me someone would call me for a quote.  I was confused as I was under the impression that they would replace it that same day per the lady on the phone.  Apparently, that was not the case.  This guy wasn?t even the guy who would replace the unit, the guy who would replace the unit was busy and they didn?t have a replacement unit. I was very frustrated and mad?I chose Harker because I was told they could do it all in one day or we both wouldn?t have taken off work.  I could have just let my dog outside for a little while for him to look at the water heater.  I paid roughly $120 for this diagnostic test.

We then called to speak with a manager at Harker.  They tried to get someone to come back out that night and replace the water heater but were unable to.  They did have someone sent out first thing the next morning and took about $50 off the service call, which was appreciated but didn?t cover the amount of money we lost at work for missing part of both days.  This all could have been avoided by having their receptionist give accurate information.  There are a ton of places in Madison I could have called to have my water heater replaced and I chose Harker because I was told they could do it that same day and if they couldn't have replaced it that day, they should have said so and I would have made other arrangements.

Update to Harkers repsonse:

At no time did they ever offer to have the heater replaced that evening for overtime rate or we would have easily paid it instead of taking more time off work.  We were told that they could try to get someone out that night but were unable to.  The only reason we okay'd them to come back the next morning is we needed it replaced as soon as possible.  We did not call later in the day-- it was still in the morning when we called.  And, obviously we know that you cannot carry all kinds of equipment around with you, but I was told that it would be replaced that night, so that is the fault of your receptionist to give me misinformation. They will try to write this so they sound like this was our fault for not knowing that they don't carry all the equipment, need licensed plumbers, etc., but we know exactly what was told to us on the phone and exactly how the situationw as handled and it was handled poorly.  We stand by our original reivew and will choose to use another company in the future.

"These guys were awesome! They were fast and reasonably priced. The only reason I didn't give five stars is that they placed the water softener tank in front of my heater, and we can't get our filters in and out. That being said, my husband never told me where it needed to be, and I don't know what I don't know. Thanks for the hot water!!"

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Several signs indicate your water heater may be failing or in need of replacement. Key indicators include:

  • Age: A water heater older than ten years is approaching the end of its typical lifespan.

  • Water Quality: If you notice rusty or discolored water from your hot water faucets, or a foul odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur, it can signal internal corrosion.

  • Unusual Noises: Banging, rumbling, or popping sounds from the tank often mean sediment has built up, causing the unit to overheat.

  • Leaks: Any water pooling around the base of the tank or visible leaks are clear signs of failure.

  • Performance Issues: A decline in performance, such as water not getting hot enough, taking longer to heat up, low water pressure, or decreased efficiency, suggests the unit is struggling.

  • Visible Damage: Obvious rust and corrosion on the exterior of the tank can indicate a more serious internal problem.

While these signs often point to replacement, some issues may be fixable. It's best to consult a professional plumber to diagnose the problem before investing in a new unit.

Signs your electric water heater is failing include inconsistent water temperature, reduced hot water supply, longer heating times, or discolored water (rusty or cloudy). Unusual noises like popping or rumbling suggest sediment buildup, while leaks or corrosion around the tank signal structural damage. If your unit is over 10 to 15 years old and experiencing frequent issues, it may be time to replace it.

A tankless water heater can last up to 20 years, which is nearly double the lifespan of a conventional tank heater. However, their longevity is highly dependent on several factors. With proper installation and regular maintenance, such as descaling to prevent mineral buildup from hard water, you can expect a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. Without proper care, a tankless unit may begin to fail in as little as 12 years. Other factors that affect its lifespan include household usage and the quality of the local water supply. While they have a higher upfront cost, their energy savings, smaller size, and longer life make them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners.

When replacing an old unit, you might want to switch from a gas water heater to an electric water heater or vice versa. To do this, you will likely need to add infrastructure to the area. For example, you likely don’t have a gas line that served your old electric water heater. You’d have to call a plumber to put in a new gas line. If you’re replacing a gas unit with an electric one, the plumber will need to safely cap the old gas line. You will then need an electrician to add wiring for the new electric unit.

Venting a gas water heater out of the roof is preferable in most cases. Heated exhaust gases naturally rise, so a vertical vent pipe is efficient. If you’re trying to vent through a pipe exiting a wall, the angle of the pipe may be more horizontal than vertical, making the venting system less effective. If you go through a wall, you may need to add a fan to ensure a successful expulsion of the gases outdoors.
