"Didn't show several times to a rewire job that he already had a hefty deposit on. I HAD TO SUE HIM TO TRY AND GET MY MONEY BACK. He showed up at court and tried to tell me he would pay me if I would just skip the hearing. I said I wasn't going to do that but would allow the commissioner to leave it open in case he didn't pay me as he claimed he would. The commissioner agreed to leave it open. Amos, wrote me a check...and then an hour later stopped payment! Yep, that's right. That's why I asked the commissioner to leave it open. At this point I knew he is so sketchy I had a feeling he would do something like this. So not only, do I have to try and get my deposit back but he pushed me back months on my house! Also, he is leaving to live in Spain and isn't planning on coming back. You won't see any deposit you put down with him but he will try to buy a lot of time by rescheduling, etc...His house has been for sale and he even did several recent price reductions to try and get it sold quicker! When we showed up for the 2nd hearing he tried lying but luckily I had things in writing that acknowledge he knows he owes me the money."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window. 

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency. 

As long as they have enough fuel, whole-house generators can run for weeks at a time (400 to 500 hours) without suffering too much wear and tear. However, this type of extensive use isn’t ideal if you want to extend the life of your generator.

Two important points. First, some generators may need you to periodically check oil levels every day or so and refill as necessary for safe operation. Second, if your generator uses a fuel tank, keep it regularly full so it doesn’t suddenly shut off. Many backup generators can run through a full tank in a day when they are powering large portions of a home.

While diesel is relatively stable, it won’t last nearly as long as propane and you may have to replace it if it sits unused for too long. Diesel can sometimes struggle to work efficiently or start engines during especially cold weather, so it’s not the best choice for every climate. Compared to fuels like propane and natural gas, diesel generators tend to be noisier and create more exhaust, which isn’t always ideal for home use.
