"You can stop searching for an electrician - hire Brey Electric. You couldn?t ask for a more professional contractor. He installed a GFCI outlet in the bathroom and had to go through a very tight attic space. He recommended the attic route because it would be less expensive than running a wire up from the basement. He explained clearly what the job would entail, finished the job ahead of schedule, vacuumed the floor when the job was completed, and went a step further to offer to provide a custom extension cord if the toilet seat cord isn?t long enough. Conner takes customer service seriously and works with the electrical contractors association to stay current with industry practices. He?s relaxed and very easy to work with. "Didn't show several times to a rewire job that he already had a hefty deposit on. I HAD TO SUE HIM TO TRY AND GET MY MONEY BACK. He showed up at court and tried to tell me he would pay me if I would just skip the hearing. I said I wasn't going to do that but would allow the commissioner to leave it open in case he didn't pay me as he claimed he would. The commissioner agreed to leave it open. Amos, wrote me a check...and then an hour later stopped payment! Yep, that's right. That's why I asked the commissioner to leave it open. At this point I knew he is so sketchy I had a feeling he would do something like this. So not only, do I have to try and get my deposit back but he pushed me back months on my house! Also, he is leaving to live in Spain and isn't planning on coming back. You won't see any deposit you put down with him but he will try to buy a lot of time by rescheduling, etc...His house has been for sale and he even did several recent price reductions to try and get it sold quicker! When we showed up for the 2nd hearing he tried lying but luckily I had things in writing that acknowledge he knows he owes me the money."

A whole house generator can be worth the extra money for peace of mind if your home is prone to power outages for extended periods of time or if you have life-saving medical equipment that needs to maintain power at all times. These devices can also increase your home’s value, especially in areas prone to extreme weather and power outages.

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

While diesel is relatively stable, it won’t last nearly as long as propane and you may have to replace it if it sits unused for too long. Diesel can sometimes struggle to work efficiently or start engines during especially cold weather, so it’s not the best choice for every climate. Compared to fuels like propane and natural gas, diesel generators tend to be noisier and create more exhaust, which isn’t always ideal for home use.

As long as they have enough fuel, whole-house generators can run for weeks at a time (400 to 500 hours) without suffering too much wear and tear. However, this type of extensive use isn’t ideal if you want to extend the life of your generator.

Two important points. First, some generators may need you to periodically check oil levels every day or so and refill as necessary for safe operation. Second, if your generator uses a fuel tank, keep it regularly full so it doesn’t suddenly shut off. Many backup generators can run through a full tank in a day when they are powering large portions of a home.
