"John was WONDERFUL to work with, especially since this was done online and over the phone as I was in Florida having plantation shutters installed in Wi. His price was lower than other estimates, his work was extraordinary, he was personable, professional, and super efficient. He helped me through the process and made valuable suggestions. Can't say enough good things about him and Better Blinds. My shutters are beautiful, getting lots of compliments. Thanks John."

"Great experience - absolute professionals.  From the start of the interview phase in January we were very impressed with Watry Homes, who we learned about while doing extensive research on cementboard siding to replace failing cedar siding.  We were not planning on doing all 3 projects at once but knew the original windows were a big issue and had obtained several quotes a year or so prior.  Scott Watry came out several times to discuss the project, ask questions and make recommendations, and always provided options and alternatives, as well as offered completed projects for us to look at. He also respected our budget, while pointing out the long term impact of waiting on certain things. One thing he talked us out of we would have regretted doing and the one thing he encouraged us to do made all the difference. We felt that not only Scott but also everyone from Watry was working as if it was their own home.  From his team who came to take measurements, to the window rep, to the job site leads, to the finish carpenter, electrician, painters, etc. everyone knew what was going on - it was an integrated, organized effort. Scott, Dave, Linda, Paul, Nick, Rob, Mary, Jeff, Jose...everybody was great!  Our scheduled early August start began on time and moved quickly.
Some things that really stood out from other contractor relationships we've had:
-Scott was always patient, accessible and responsive, even at the end of the project. Much more of a consultant than a salesman.
-Changes or "non-contracted" requests were accommodated without hesitation or "nickel & diming".
-Project leads and crew regularly asked for preferences when I didn't even consider that I had a choice. i.e.)  At one point, while cutting exterior trim molding, they created 2 different "looks" for me to choose from. One was what I had "picked". The other was one they thought looked better - they were right.
-They were happy to coordinate timing with our own subs when necessary and helped us anticipate that timing.
-Everyone took pride in their work and seemed very particular. The job leaders were meticulous about the work they did and oversaw, as well as the cleanup, interior and exterior, each day.
-We were always informed of schedule specifics.  Everyone seemed to be aware of the whole job scope and timing.
-Handling of mistakes: The one issue we had was an incorrect order resulting from a typo that we signed off on.  Scott took care of it immediately with the supplier without question. The buck stopped with him on everything, but clearly has a ton of confidence in his team.
Scott said in the beginning that they wouldn't be done until we felt everything was perfect. An easy thing to say, but Watry Homes held to that standard.

"I received an email about the purchase and to submit pictures of  my room. I then received an email back about things to buy for my room. I received nothing about furniture placement or colors, just that I could buy things to enhance my room. So  I thought it was a way for the provider to make a commission off the accessories. I did not use her again. So I lost out on $39.

"Because houseguests were coming on short notice, we needed to redo a bathroom that was in terrible shape. It didn't just need to be painted - the wall surfaces were a mess, with a poorly done sandcoat finish and problems due to previously removed wallpaper and border. Also, because of somewhat odd colored tile and grout in the tub/shower, we despaired of finding a wall color that would look good with the tile, but yet harmonize with the colors in the rest of the house. Shena at Red Canary was just terrific - she came out right away, squeezed us into her schedule in time to be done before our guests arrived, and she came up with a great color choice we just love! The walls were repaired and skim coated to correct the flaws before painting - they look perfect - you'd never know the state they'd been in before! Everyone we dealt with was very friendly and professional, and went out of their way to help us with other aspects of the renovation project. Shena has very high standards for work quality, and she wasn't ready to sign off on the job as finished until everything was perfect. We were so happy to have learned of Red Canary and Shena through Angie's List - she was a delight to work with, and we're thrilled with the outcome. We will be using Red Canary on another painting job coming up soon, and can wholeheartedly recommend this company to anyone needing painting services!"

Window Shutters questions, answered by experts

Shutters are still very common in Southern, farmhouse, and traditional-style homes, especially those in warm climates who can benefit from the increased efficiency. While modern homes and designs tend to shy away from shutters, shutters are a timeless design style that will likely be around for decades to come.

Plantation shutters cost an average of $2,990, making them one of the pricier shutter options. However, they offer a 75% return on your investment and are great options for boosting curb appeal and property value. Most people go for plantation shutters for their timeless, vintage look. They also provide the strongest light blocking and temperature control for your home.

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.

The most popular estate shutter brands include Hunter Douglas, Budget Blinds®, and Graber®. Hunter Douglas shutters cost $20 to $26 per square foot and include high-quality hardwood and faux wood options. Budget Blinds shutters cost $20 to $24 per square foot, depending on if you choose natural wood or another material. Depending on the material, Graber shutters range from $18 to $24 per square foot.

Estate shutters offer more energy efficiency, privacy, and light control than blinds. They provide better insulation against heat and cold, lowering your energy bills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and last much longer than blinds (up to 50 years or longer). They’re also low-maintenance and can add curb appeal to your home. The return on investment (ROI) for estate shutters is around 75%.
