The easiest and best way to power your outdoor lights is with the use of outdoor outlets. Most building codes now require exterior outlets in homes, so you likely already have outdoor outlets available to plug into. However, you can have these outlets installed if your space doesn’t currently include them.

To power the system down, simply turn it off and cut it off from its electricity. That means removing the transformer from the wall plug and taking out the battery that usually sits within the control panel itself. That will disconnect it from power and essentially reset the entire alarm system.

If only half of your outlet works, there are usually two possible causes: faulty wiring or a half-hot outlet. The first thing you'll want to do is check the circuit breaker panel to ensure that it's not tripped. If your circuit breaker isn't tripped, turn off the electricity and inspect the wiring to see if anything has come loose or corroded. 

If you have a half-hot outlet, it means half of the outlet is controlled by a switch somewhere on the same circuit, which should be nearby. This is an intentional electrical design commonly found in rooms without overhead lights.

Many wire nuts can accommodate three wires of various gauges; you should check the packaging of the nut to confirm you are buying the correct size. In addition, there are screw terminals that accommodate various numbers of wires; these might also be called “terminal blocks,” and exist to connect multiple wires. 

Using a wire stripper/cutter, strip about 1/2 inch to 1 inch of sheathing from electric wires, depending on the application. A self-adjusting wire stripper/cutter works best, but a standard wire stripper/cutter with holes for different gauges of wire works as well to cut and strip away the sheath without damaging the copper wire inside.
