Customers say: Super punctual

"We saw the great reviews for Fulmer tile on Angie's list so held out for him even though he was very busy. We liked the idea of having a small family business do the job. We literally waited 9 months for the job, with the hole in our wall covered with a garbage bag from October until June. He originally thought he would have time in January, but we finally got the July dates on the schedule. The estimate was for $1,118.50. Gary and his crew were personable and prompt, and went right to work. On the second day, when Gary said the crew would start tiling the surround and he would come by noonish, I expressed my concern, because the reason we had waited so long was to have him do a professional job in the tub surround, which seemed like the more difficult area, and we wanted a quality job. He assured me that it would be a cake walk for his experienced crew. There were two problems with the job. One was that they used the wrong pencil line tiles. I had shown Gary the tiles we were using, but between showing him that first day and his crew tiling the second day, communication dropped somewhere along the line. Prior to the job, before we had found the correct tile, we had purchased a "bird-in-the-hand" pencil line, and the crew used that one instead of the final choice. It was 10x as expensive as the one we wanted, so that was a bummer -- Gary did point it out to me after the tiles were all up, when he realized the error. He offered to tear it all out and use the desired pencil line. That seemed extreme, and I figured the tiles wouldn't clean up well enough to return anyway, so I tried to be a good sport and shrugged it off as "it's just money, right?" What I did not realize at the time was that the expensive tile they used was also 1/8" wider and threw off the line so the new surround tiles don't line up with the adjacent wall tiles. I was too flustered about the cost difference and trying not to over-react so I didn't clue in enough. I share the blame for the poor communication and for leaving the wider expensive tiles out with the other materials, and for not evaluating more carefully when he offered to tear it out, but I do wish that the worker had brought it to my attention as soon as he saw that the wide pencil tile would throw the line off. You can also see in the photos that some of the tiles are slightly skewed and the pencil lines don't line up in the corners, etc. The other main problem with the job was the grout. Gary left a less experienced worker to do that without any oversight. The worker asked us to continue wiping the grout after he left (which seemed a little weird). We did contact Gary that evening, letting him know that there was a lot of grout still left on the tiles, and expressing concern that the grout would harden too much by the next day to fix it. Gary said it would be fine the next day. They did come out and work on it the next day, but after they fixed it as much as they could, even Gary said that it was not a good grout job. Gary did not charge us for retiling the surround because of the bad grout job, and subtracted that $315 off of our bill. I would have far preferred to pay the whole price for a quality job. He added on $60 for reinstalling the grab bars when rebuilding the surround; I'm not sure why that wouldn't have been included in the original estimate. The final bill was $962.50. In summary, the bathroom absolutely does look way better than when we started -- the tub surround doesn't have a huge hole in it, and the floor tile is a big improvement. It is probably a better job than we could have done ourselves, and we didn't have to do it. They were pleasant people to deal with. Gary did try to make good on the problem by discounting the bill, although he couldn't fix the problems. I definitely would not have waited 9 months if I knew it would turn out like this. I would either decide to go with a big shop (for a hopefully more professional job and higher bill), or with our regular contractor who is less experienced with tile (for a similar level of job and similar price but a lot faster). [in my ratings I considered responsiveness to be the January->July delay; punctuality to be each day on the job]"

"Impressed by the prompt response by Angel. They spent 5-6 hours on our marble countertop refinishing the damaged area. Did not even take a break. The end result was beautiful. The island looked as it did the day it was installed. Highly recommend HDZ."

"It went very well. Scott was very responsive with detailed information on his products and services while we were considering re-finishing vs. new unit. Once we decided to go with refinishing he was also very responsive with regards to what we needed to do ahead of time. He was timely in scheduling the work and Jeremy who did the refinishing was very pleasant to work with. He also put the new finish on the ceramic tile that was above the tub/shower unit. The work on the tub/shower unit included filling holes, other general repair and adding a non-skid finish. His quote was the most expensive of those that we received but I still rate his price "A" because, from everything I learned his product was much superior to the others that quoted. The finished product looks beautiful."

"Very happy with this company. Humberto was great to work with. He found us several quartz options within our budget to match the color scheme we wanted. Email communication was prompt and efficient. Fabrication and installation were completed very fast--measurements were done, fabrication completed, and counter top install was completed within 4 business days of my cabinets being installed! I was told to expect roughly a month for this from some other companies. The install work is beautiful--you really have to look for the necessary seam. Thanks!"

"Installed Mendota Basic gas insert fireplace:  Install went OK except I preferred to use my electrician and there was a mix up between contractors about how to install the wiring so it had to be done over.  Jim tested the fireplace several times.  He gave good instructions to a carpenter about building a box to support the insert.
Stone tile around the insert:  Jim did a beautiful job, and he arranged the tiles just the way I wanted them.  He worked with my carpenters to design the framing to accommodate the design for wood trim and mantle that I wanted.
Rebuilt the chimney from the roof up:  The masonry itself is professional.   This took a long time to complete due to the long winter and to various excuses (e,g, deaths, illnesses, other jobs started after ours).   The scaffolding was left up longer than promised and that annoyed the neighbor who could not use his driveway.  Communication on this issue was difficult for all of us.
Concrete cap on chimney:  This looks great.  Jim forgot to do a little piece of cap on the side, but he came back and did it later, no questions asked.
Tuck pointing: Grinding went well.  Missed a few "bee holes" the first time round.  Jim came back later and filled those in.
Waterproofing:  this went well.
Block cutting and installing a larger glass block window: Glass block looks great, and matches the other glass block windows in the basement.
Window well:  Jim used landscape blocks that matched the style and color of a window well around another basement window.  The blocks are level and fit exactly.  They look great.
Fireplace doors:  Jim picked doors of a style I wanted.  Installation was professional.  I was disappointed that the doors don't seal airtight as I had understood when we initially discussed the job.  I felt this should have been discussed more before the doors were installed.
Epoxy floor:This didn't go so well.  The grinder left many semi-circular and circular gouges in the floor which could not be ground out.  So the floor is very uneven.  Perhaps this was due to the quality of the existing concrete, but I don't really know.  Then the epoxy paint he used didn't cover the floor.  Jim did this over at his expense.
Communication:  Early on, Jim kept me well-informed about when he would come and arrived as planned.  However, there were times when calls and emails went unanswered for days.   Scaffolding that blocked the neighbor's driveway was not removed when promised.   During the second contract, the number of unanswered calls increased.  Several times Jim promised to come and did not show up or explain why, which delayed all the other work that had to wait until after the floor was redone.  It also meant I was having to arrange for my daughter to be elsewhere on days even when he didn't show up and put off other contractors.  This happened at least half a dozen times.
Timeliness: There were several delays on the first job, attributed to weather but not entirely due to that, so the job took longer than we expected.  Therefore,  in the second contract we specified a start date (April 26, 2013) and an end date (May 10, 2013) and a penalty for missing the date.  The job was not complete until the end of August, when he came to install the fireplace doors, to complete the tuck-pointing and waterproofing and to redo the floor.

Marble Restoration questions, answered by experts

Silestone® is a brand of quartz countertops; one isn’t necessarily better, but they have their differences. Silestone® costs slightly more than the average quartz countertop because you’re paying for the brand name and unique features. For example, Silestone® is often more sustainable than regular quartz because you can purchase varieties made with recycled materials. It also has antibacterial properties and design options some homeowners prefer. Plus, you can use it across your whole kitchen rather than solely for countertops.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface materials can be cut with standard woodworking tools, such as a circular saw or a jigsaw. However, it is crucial to use the correct type of blade to avoid damaging the material.

For a circular saw, a tungsten carbide-tipped blade is required; a triple chip grind blade is highly recommended. For a jigsaw, you should use a fine-tooth down-cutting blade. Do not use blades designed for cutting wood, as they can cause microfractures that weaken the edges of the countertop. A diamond blade is also unnecessary, as those are designed for harder materials like natural stone, which Corian is not.

After cutting, the edge will be rough. It is essential to sand and smooth the cut edge to prevent microfractures, which can eventually compromise the integrity of the countertop.

Using water when cutting stone drastically reduces the amount of dust that comes off the stone. It’s beneficial to cut down on the amount of dust for respiratory and other safety reasons, such as keeping your vision clear while using an electric tool. Even with protective eyewear, the dust can still cloud your safety glasses. You should always wear protective gear when cutting stone.

No, you cannot use vinegar to polish marble. It is too acidic for cleaning or polishing and can etch the surface. Instead, opt for non-acidic cleaners made specifically for marble. Follow the manufacturer’s directions to ensure proper application and to protect the marble. However, a damp mop can be an effective marble cleaner when used appropriately and as long as moisture is immediately soaked up.

It all comes down to rarity and demand. Granite rocks with unique patterns or rare colorways like red, purple, and blue are more expensive than traditional designs. Some types of blue granite are extremely rare, like Azul Aran and Blue Bahia, driving the price up even further. The most expensive type of all is a unique design called Van Gogh granite. As the name suggests, it sort of looks like a painting.
