"Max was excellent to deal with and very flexible. The work required replacement of four flourescent lights, an outdoor spot light and dealing with several electrical outlets. The cost of the work was reasonable and Max completed the work in a minimum amount of time. Great job!"

"The problem turned out to be a burned out small electric door switch. I believe the price was way too expensive for the service performed and the price of the door switch. What more can I say? It got done."

"When the unit stopped working, I call several Madison area companies to get estimates. Harker was one of just 2 that responded quickly to schedule a visit and give me quotes. Harker was competitive, and it was replaced the next week in a day. The technician, Eric, was excellent and thorough. Unit functioning great."

"Though we had a scheduling misunderstanding due to illness of the Custom Craft owner on the date I expected service to start, and though there was also an initial set back due to machinery mal- function which was quite promptly corrected, Custom Craft did an excellent job with the contracted work and finished on schedule. I appreciated the professionalism of the inspection and estimate process. I also appreciated the promptness of email communication as we scheduled the job.

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You can use both LED and incandescent bulbs in an incandescent fixture as long as the bulb base is the right size. Never use a higher wattage than what the fixture recommends. However, it’s usually safe when transitioning to LED bulbs because they typically have a lower wattage than their incandescent counterparts.

There are a few signs of a faulty or failing dimmer switch. This includes your dimmer overheating or feeling warm to the touch, buzzing or clicking noises coming from the dimmer, your dimmer failing to properly dim the lights, and flickering lights. That said, these signs could signal other electrical issues. You’ll need a pro to figure out if your dimmer is the source.

Window ACs use 500 to 1,400 watts per hour of electricity, while mini-splits use 500 to 700 watts per hour. However, if you need to cool multiple zones in your house, your mini-split can use as much as 2,000 watts per hour. How often you run your system will impact how much electricity you use (and how much you pay per month).

To reset an electric fireplace, first shut the unit off using the control panel or remote control. Make sure the unit is entirely shut down, then unplug it from the power outlet. Wait five to 10 minutes, then plug the fireplace back in and turn it on. This process should reset the electric fireplace. After resetting, make sure to set the thermostat, timer, and other programmable settings to suit your preferences.

Just like apples in a bunch, one bad outlet can cause other outlets to stop working. This is especially true if the outlets are connected in a series on the same circuit. When one outlet develops a fault, it can spread to every outlet downstream of the original.
