"Troy came to the house and spent more than an hour figuring out the best way to install a ventilation system for my print room. There were a lot of challenges to overcome, but nonetheless he came up with a plan that I approved and at a more than fair price. On the day of the installation, the crew showed up right on time. They had to open my ceiling to route the ductwork, install the blower in the AC closet, and mount everything cleanly and neatly out of the way. By the time they were finished, you could not even tell they had opened a hole in the ceiling or been working there at all. Everything was perfectly cleaned up and professionally done. Thanks again for all the hard work. I highly recommend Apex Heating and Air Conditioning."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The average cost to replace or install a new HVAC system is around $7,500. However, the price can range from $5,000 to $12,500, depending on factors like the size of your home, the type and brand of the unit, and your specific heating and cooling needs. If you only need to replace certain components, the cost will be lower; for example, a new AC unit can cost between $2,200 and $5,500, while a new furnace costs $3,200 to $6,000. If additional work like new ductwork is required, the total cost could be as high as $22,000. It's best to contact a local HVAC company for an accurate quote.

Yes, it’s best to turn off an AC unit that’s blowing hot air to prevent system damage and avoid expensive energy bills. If you let the AC continue running, it will put more strain on the condenser coil and compressor. Plus, if the AC is blowing hot air because of a refrigerant leak, it can also lead to a frozen evaporator coil.

If refrigerant levels are low, it can cause the evaporator coil to freeze up. Low freon causes a drop in pressure, which will make the coil too cold and cause moisture to freeze on the coil. Your system may be low on refrigerant because of a leak

Make sure to have maintenance performed twice a year, and contact your local HVAC technician if you suspect your system has low freon levels.

The cost of R32 refrigerant is about the same as the cost of R410A refrigerant, the most widely available type of refrigerant today. However, R32 systems use about 20% less refrigerant than R410A systems, making the refrigerant less expensive overall.

The general rule of thumb for figuring out how much AC tonnage you need in your home is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of space you need to cool, you’ll need one ton of AC cooling power. So, a 1,000-square-foot home will need 2 tons of AC power.
