"We highly recommend this company. Kirk was on time and did what he said he was going to do. A complete and thorough energy audit was done including negative pressure test, smoke stick testing, thermo imaging evaluation, photos up in the attic and ending with a summary of what he found and advice on prioritizing projects. We opted to take notes because we didn t need a formal report. Kirk was very pleasant, patient and answered our multitude of questions. We learned a lot from him and we really appreciate all of the time he spent with us helping us understand the what s, why s and how s that need to be done. He went above and beyond what we expected and we are very grateful for it."

"Perfectly! The installers, Dan and Tristan, were timely, professional and clearly experts in their field. Erik Hoover, our estimator, couldn't have been more timely and professional. I've worked with this company for 20 years and have never been disappointed."

"I called Home Squad not knowing what to expect, I haven't heard of this company. But, I'm GLAD I did, Home Squad was amazing throughout the entire experience from calling them and setting up an appointment to meeting a wonderful electrician. Tyler was his name. Tyler was very personable and made sure he answered all my questions, I would highly recommend calling this company. They are greatly trained techs that come out and diagnose and explain things like no other. They installed a Tesla charger for my home in Bellevue and I can't wait to have them install a solar roof to my home. I have been running a generator for quite some time and solar shingles look beautiful on homes, I am ready to switch and have this team take care of it for me."

"Well, it was fun as well as giving me just what I wanted for my house.....more light, more privacy, and aesthetics. The nice thing about Tim, aside from the fact that he's a nice person and very intelligent, and gifted in his field, is that he listens and makes you part of the process. I felt totally at ease and secure giving him keys to my house for work that was done when I wasn't there. My house maintains it's old feel (he blended the new with the old) as well as contributing to making it an even more beautiful house."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

Home power is measured in kilowatt-hours, commonly expressed as kWh. The average home uses between 800 and 1,000 kWh per month. Peak usage (and highest bills) occurs in the middle of summer and the depths of winter. Keeping on top of your usage during these crucial months will lower your annual average usage considerably.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Leaving lights on raises the electric bill, but not as much as having high-wattage light bulbs. The best way to save on electric costs is to swap your light bulbs to LED or CFL bulbs that use far fewer watts. You can also use smart lights and light switches to control usage via a smartphone or voice-controlled device.

You can increase your home’s load factor by replacing fuse boxes with a circuit breaker, hiring a licensed electrician to upgrade your electrical panel, upgrading wiring, or installing subpanels. An electrical inspection by an expert can help determine the state of your current electrical systems and how they can be improved.

If you have central air conditioning, it’s fine to run your AC all day if that’s what you want—as long as the AC unit is in good condition. But if your AC runs constantly when you don’t want it to, there may be a problem with your system (like the ones we’ve mentioned above). Window AC units and wall air conditioners aren’t as powerful as central AC, so you should only run those kinds of air conditioners for eight to 12 hours at a time.
