"Skipper & Sons installed a entryway chandelier in high ceiling 18' tall. They installed a new light and switch in an unfinished closet, and 3 new canned lights and new switch in my master bedroom. They also fixed the wiring in an existing switch in the downstairs hallway. They did professional electrical work."

"Brian at Tyson Electric really knows his work. He is also thorough, polite, and professional. We needed 2 240 volt circuits installed in 2 separate buildings. We also needed an electrical cord added to an expensive piece of equipment that would run through these 240 circuits. Brian completed all of the work smoothly and in time for our needs. Outstanding!"

"My living room only had 3 can light fixtures and the lighting was inadequate for family gatherings, reading and overall seeing my living room set. Originally I contacted Home Squad to install 6 fixtures but after reviewing my electrical panel, it was very old and he recommended to upgrade the panel as well since I am also looking to install a Tesla charger. The electrician was very professional and completed the entire job in approximately 5 hours. The lighting looks great. It totally transformed the room. The fixtures are aligned amazingly. He also cleaned up and left the area in better shape than it was they arrived. I am so impressed with the work I am going to have them back to install Tesla charger for my car. I would highly recommend Home Squad Electrical for any home improvement projects you may be considering. The price is fair and reasonable."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

No, a ceiling fan doesn’t have to be wired to a switch, but it’s often more convenient. You can use the included pull chain if your ceiling isn’t too high or install a remote module later, as they are a cheap, easy-to-install option that’ll let you control both the fan and light fixture.

To determine if your ceiling box can support a fan, you must check if it is specifically fan-rated. Manufacturers are required to indicate this on the box itself. You may need to remove the existing light fixture to look inside the ceiling box for an inscription stating it is rated for fan use. If you do not see this confirmation, the box is likely not strong enough and must be replaced with a fan-rated junction box. For a proper and safe installation, you should also use a fan brace to secure the new box between the ceiling joists, which provides the necessary support for the fan's weight and motion.

The number of blades for your fan poses both advantages and disadvantages. Typically, the more blades on a fan, the better the air distribution and cooling effect, but this also means that your fan will have more wear on its motor. For small rooms, three-blade fans should work fine. For larger areas like living rooms, four or five-blade fans might be the better option.

If you’re replacing an old fixture with a ceiling fan, you usually won’t need a permit, but if your electrician runs new wiring for the fixture, you likely will need a permit. Building permits are necessary in most municipalities if you’re making changes to your electrical system, so even if you have partial wiring run to the area and need new wiring installed for added functionality, you’ll probably need a permit. Your electrician should be able to let you know if you need one, and they’ll typically file the paperwork for you.

If you’re removing a ceiling fan without visible screws, start by locating the fan canopy—a round cover placed above the fan blades and motor. There should be a thin ring that can be turned counterclockwise to remove the canopy and reveal the screws. After unscrewing the fan, you can disconnect the wires and remove the entire fan from the mounting hardware. For safety, make sure the fan switch is turned off before you remove the canopy. It may be easier to remove the fan blades first, too.
