"Leo and his team did a great job on our new deck. Very professional and accessible (always responded immediately to calls and emails). Used creative ideas and worked with my ideas also. Much appreciated. Would definitely hire them again for any future projects."

"I have worked with a number of contractors in the Bellingham area for a number of different projects on our home. For anything major, I won't go anywhere else now that I've worked with Chris. He's patient, thorough, and communicates extremely well. His prices are fair and I never once had to worry about being taken advantage of. He is also very clean, regularly cleaning the work area and making sure dump runs are made to minimize the impact he's having on your day to day life during construction. Do note that Chris likes to work alone with the help of quality subs. So set expectations accordingly with your timeline. That said, it's worth any additional time. We have a number of projects that we will trust Chris with as his schedule allows. Don't hesitate to hire."

Small jobs welcome

"I had a full bathroom remodel done by Burlingame. I was referred by a friend of mine and I am extremely happy with the work that was done. The crew was respectful, courteous, and cleaned up at the end of each day. Burlingame was easy to work with and assisted in the design choices along the way. When unexpected things came up, they always do, prompt notification was provided and any issues were addressed. I plan on having Burlingame remodel the guest bathroom and kitchen in the future. I’m extremely satisfied with the quality of the work and final product. I highly recommend their services!"

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

While it’s never too early to start planning for a major home improvement project like a home addition, give yourself at least a month or two to plan and design your addition, find a contractor, and get the permits in order. For larger projects like a second-story addition that require designing with an architect, plan on three to four months of preparation.

Costs depend on project complexity, software requirements, and the draftsperson’s experience.

Yes, new home construction will always require building permits, no matter where you live. In most cases, you’ll need a general construction permit, along with plumbing and electrical permits for the utility lines in your home. Depending on where you live, you’ll likely find that you also need permits for things like connection to a sewage system or installing exterior components, like decks, driveways, patios, and curb cutouts. Leave navigating the permits required for new home construction to a professional to ensure your home is built legally and safely.

Balancing aesthetics with functionality amidst space planning is important. To do so, you could consider consulting both an interior designer and an architect to fulfill both these needs. Or you can tackle it on your own by prioritizing personal touches amidst space planning that add to the look but don't take away from the livability of the space.

You'll find Arts and Crafts homes across the country in varying styles. On the East Coast, bungalows and Tudor Revivals fill the Boston area through New Jersey. In the West, Mission-style homes incorporate terracotta shingles, white stucco siding, and rounded archways.
