"The staff was friendly and professional. They demonstrated a desire to get to work asap which made the selection easy. Also got a spray foam insulation bid for crawl space and we will go with SPF for this large expense. Spay foam crawl supports our heated floors so that more heat will heat people opposed to rats in the crawl..."

"Insulation Co (Jo Estrada) had insulation installers come to our century old house to remove old attic insulation, do a bit of mold remediation, insulate the bathroom fan exhaust, cover the two previously open gable spaces at either end of our roof, then blow in new cellulose insulation. All this took a day, and all was cleaned up like nothing happened. Polite, efficient, professional, and the price was competitive."

"Lake Atitlan Insulation did an excellent job in my attic. They removed the old insulation, installed a solar attic vent, replaced the bathroom vent duct, and added new blown-in fiberglass insulation. They also installed radiant barrier on all the attic roof rafters. The work was completed professionally and thoroughly. I highly recommend them."

"It went very well from the estimate process. Rory took the time to explain the process. As I had questions, he took the time to talk to me and explain in detail. Deb coordinated the scheduling extremely well. Among the estimates I got they were the most reasonably priced. I started out only doing the attic. They did such a good job, I decided to go ahead and have the crawlspace insulated as well by Madrona Insulation. BTW, shout out to a terrific installation crew!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

If you have access to the foundation walls, adding spray foam insulation to your existing unfinished basement or crawl space is straightforward. Replacing existing insulation in your unfinished attic space is possible after removing the old insulation. However, spray foam insulating an existing wall after the drywall is in place isn’t possible unless you remove most of the drywall.

At a minimum, blown-in insulation lasts 20 to 30 years. Cellulose and sheep’s wool come from natural materials, so they likely max out at around 30 years. Fiberglass and rockwool feature artificial materials that boast lengthy lifespans, up to 50 years, or even longer in some cases. As always, this timeline assumes you don’t run into any issues, such as flooding or mold, that shorten the lifespan.

If you have blown-in insulation, using an insulation vacuum will quickly and easily suck up all the insulation. Many come with built-in HEPA filters for added safety. While some people suggest breaking up large batts and feeding them into the vacuum, this can expose you to more fiberglass fibers. With batts and rolls, carefully removing them and placing them into garbage bags is a better process.

Yes, you need a 1.5-inch to 2-inch air gap in a cathedral ceiling to allow proper air flow and prevent cathedral ceiling venting problems. This amount of airspace allows warm, moist air to properly leave your ceiling to avoid moisture build-up and other issues that put your home at risk. You can also add an air vent for extra air flow.

Spray foam insulation can last between 80 and 100 years, depending on the type. Closed-cell spray foam is more durable, while open-cell foam is more susceptible to moisture damage and deterioration. It's important to consult a professional installer to understand which type of foam will be used and its specific longevity. Additionally, be aware that some spray foams can damage plastic piping, so if you have PVC or CPVC pipes, discuss this with your installer.
