"Insulation NW did an excellent job of removing old inadequate insulation from an attic and crawlspace and replacing it with new insulation and wrapping the ductwork. They had two crews, one for the attic and one for the crawlspace, working for many hours to complete the job. A vapor barrier was also installed in the crawlspace. We paid a very reasonable price after the large PSE Rebate was applied."

"Insulation Co recently performed a crawlspace cleanout. Jo Estrada performed a bid for my home based upon on-line square footage and floor plans very quickly. His staff of 3 men arrived at about 7:30 AM and completed the crawlspace cleanout in about 7 hours. Several things that I learned during this process my 1998 built home: Had insulation with formaldehyde Had R-19 insulation - New installed insulation was R-30 The old insulation was no longer efficient after 20 years The new (R-30) insulation will be efficient for 30 years Insulation Co also does attic insulation replacement When they completed the crawlspace cleanout, the crawlspace looked better than it did when the home was new."

"Lake Atitlan Insulation did an excellent job in my attic. They removed the old insulation, installed a solar attic vent, replaced the bathroom vent duct, and added new blown-in fiberglass insulation. They also installed radiant barrier on all the attic roof rafters. The work was completed professionally and thoroughly. I highly recommend them."

"This company is fantastic! 1. Out of the 5 companies I was considering for insulation replacement (yes 5), their quote was the only one that was itemized and understandable. You knew each task you were paying for as well as what the workers were promising to deliver, which is extremely important when dealing with contractors. I found this out having met with 20+ over the last month. 2. They had the most reasonable price, and Rory in particular worked to volunteer his expertise on what our situation needed/did not need with an honesty that is hard to come by because it did not come off as self-serving or trying to take advantage of our lack of expertise. 3. They were reliable, on time, and very communicative every step of the way. They touched base frequently about our complicated situation, they were available for price discussions, and they were direct in communicating arrival and finishing times. I was extremely impressed. 4. The individuals at this company went above and beyond the call of duty. Rory was a pleasure to deal with; he reminds me of the neighbor you want to have because he has great advice, good contacts if you need work outside his company, and reasonable suggestions for what you can do to fix things, and to boot he was extremely available. He even answered our many calls with random questions off-work hours AND he volunteered to come out himself again outside of work hours just to help figure out the steps to fixing our problem. Debbie was affable and an organized presence on the phone. The other staff we worked with- Santiago, Rafael, Luis, and Felix- were all extremely courteous and hardworking during the projects. 5. They worked to coordinate with other contractors without me having to micromanage anyone. I had a roofing company, arborist/tree service, and vent cleaners on site. They were able to navigate their own working space and work in tandem on the roof with the roofers to replace the insulation on the cathedral portion of the house when the underdeck was ripped off, as well as add baffles appropriately. 6. They brainstormed to fix problems we were having at extremely reasonable prices. Example: The attic portion of my home was missing half the ceiling (had to be removed because of extensive mold damage) and they helped me place drywall so we could replace the insulation on the timeline we initially agreed to. It saved my husband and me a lot of money and heartache. What more could you want from a company? The biggest impression I walked away with is that this company actually cares about your situation. My husband and I were purchasing a new home in need of a lot of repairs. We have a toddler and I am third-trimester pregnant. With the move, the unpleasant relationship we had with the previous owners of our home, the strain on our finances, and the overwhelming stress of finding new problems everywhere we looked, I can only say I am extremely grateful we went with Madrona Home Services. Thank you!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The average cost to install insulation is around $1,800, but you could pay anywhere between $500 and $4,500, depending on various factors. Some of the things that have a significant influence on your pricing include the following:

  • Size of the area

  • Type and R-value of the insulation

  • Whether your space is finished or unfinished

  • Accessibility of the area

  • Your geographical location

  • Amount of site preparation, especially for blown-in insulation

  • Whether or not you need old insulation removed

Insulating a stone house is an expensive and involved process because it requires building a double-walled house. The walls don’t need to be the same thickness, but they both need to be thick enough to handle any structural demands and meet fire and safety standards. The insulation (usually foam or fiberglass) is then installed between the two stone walls.

The lifespan of cellulose insulation is 20 to 30 years, on average. That said, it’s important to start checking your insulation after year 10 to check for degradation, mold, mildew, and other potential problems. Every 10 years, you should also confirm your home’s insulation is in line with updated local building codes.

R-30 insulation is better for higher thermal resistance, but whether it’s "better" depends on the application. R-30 is much thicker and suited for areas like attics or floors in cold climates, where more insulation is required. R-13, on the other hand, is thinner and works well for 2x4 walls or milder climates where less insulation is sufficient. Choosing between R-13 and R-30 depends on the area being insulated and the climate. For example, R-30 provides more insulation but may not fit everywhere in your home.

Natural fiber batts and spray foam insulation both work great for soundproofing. Newer materials, such as hemp batts, are more expensive but more effective for insulation and sound blocking. They are also more sustainable. There is also a professional system called Blow-In Blanket Insulation (BIBS) that is soundproof and moisture-resistant. However, BIBS must be installed professionally and can be a costly investment.
