"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"I trusted SIMON since he was very thorough time wise. Said hee had puy in 100 skylights. I was home for most of the time he was here but had a dr. appt. Gone for hour and 1/2 by the time I returned he was gone so didnt get a picture to sign off placement. Three weeks later strong winds blew off flashing. Attempted to contact Simon 2-3 times and still no reponse from him. I have done roofing before and know flashing has to be secured. I cannot send pictures no way of getting on the roof. I just have to pray no leaks happen before i can find someone to fix it. Jan Kelsey DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY UNLESS YOU WANT TO THROW MONEY AWAY."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Skylights are the most likely windows to leak if installed improperly, so there are a few questions you should ask any skylight installer before you hire them:

  • Do you specialize in skylight installation or only windows in general?

  • Do you offer any kind of warranty for the installation?

  • What recourse do I have if the skylight leaks shortly after installation?

  • Do you have references I can speak with?

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Are you licensed and insured?

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.

Local window and door specialists, glaziers, and roofers should all install skylights. You can also do an internet search to find companies that specialize in skylight installation near you. Keep in mind that skylight installation is very complex and can be dangerous without the proper tools and safety precautions, so we don’t recommend this as a DIY project.

Most homeowners insurance policies cover skyight damage that is caused by hail. Hail damage is considered a covered peril under most standard insurance policies. However, this only applies if your skylights were properly installed. Also, insurance policies vary, so be sure to check your individual policy to see if skylight hail damage is covered.

Pros of installing a skylight include the fact that you will get much more natural light in your home, skylights can make your room look bigger than it actually is, and your home may increase in value. Cons include difficult upkeep (you may have to get on a ladder to clean and maintain them), higher installation costs, and, potentially, too much heat gain from all the extra sunlight.
