"Bryan (estimator) explained and demonstrated roofing materials at first meeting. He was experienced and attention to details about project proposal. We had scheduled with outstanding workers who came on time and worked directly three days to finish the whole roof and did all damaged plywood that we requested (well done and efficient). All inspections after completion and follow up the project with us afterward. Derek was cheerfully coming to our house for final inspection and concerns. He was clearly explained all questions and concerns that we had. Very satisfy with all his extraordinary customer service and pleasure to meet him. We definitely recommend them in future."

"This contractor offered the best price and was local so there was not a travel fee. Once the contract was signed, the drop box was delivered and work began the next day. Jimmy and his crew tore off two layers of old roofing, inspected the sheeting for water damage, and installed new felt, flashing, roof vents and 30-year architectural shingles. Jimmy kept me informed as work progressed so I know that they found a leak in the outer layer that had not yet penetrated the inner layer of old roofing. All sheeting was in good condition. They completed the job in 3.5 days and did a good clean-up job of the work site."

"What we liked about Mike was the following:

  • --He is the owner, and came out to do the bid himself.
  • --He told us that he would be doing all the work, which is rare these days.
  • --He was the only person out of all the bids we took who actually got up on the roof.
  • --He would have done the repairs we needed on the spot if he'd had the parts in his truck, which, when you have a potential leak, is definitely something to be appreciated!
  • --His bid was very reasonable.
  • --He would have been able to get started within the week,In the end, we picked a different company, because they had the garage solution we needed, but we would still recommend Mike to anyone.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.

The decision to remove a skylight depends on your specific circumstances and preferences. There are several reasons why you might consider removing a skylight, such as extensive damage, a desire for better insulation, or the need to change the room's layout. Additionally, if the skylight is causing leaks or other issues, it may be necessary to remove and replace it (which can incur additional skylight installation costs). It's important to assess your specific situation and consult with professionals if needed to make an informed decision.

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.

Yes, you can install skylights on an existing roof, and it’s a common service that many homeowners opt for, especially on older homes built when skylights weren’t as prevalent. The installation process will be a bit more involved, and the design and planning process will take longer, meaning you’ll pay more to install a skylight on an existing roof than you would in new construction. The process involves cutting a hole in the roof, moving rafters, if necessary, and installing and sealing around the skylight.
