"Josh and Zach are fantastic! They can do anything! Building on heavily treed undeveloped acreage. The built the construction road, dug foundation pits, cleared brush, thinned trees, dug trenches for water lines and electric conduit. They work directly with other contractors and county to get specs, handle inspections, ask questions. Very professional, highest quality work, reasonably priced. I have never worked with a better contractor!"

"Just a quick note to let you know how happy we are with the work that your tree service provided to us. Your crew was very professional, efficient & hardworking… and of course, they cut trees/ wood into manageable lengths (as we requested) left our yard cleaned and raked. Stump removal services available, too. We had several neighbors compliment about how professional & safe your crew worked. Special thanks to Mike and Westerlund Tree Service!"

"Jon was very professional. He was on time for a consultation and again for actual work. He very flexible taking on additional work I requested while on site. He sought to save a tree that was viable with careful pruning rather than simply cutting it down as others had proposed. His work was skillful and accomplished our goal. In the end his bill came in within his bid which we appreciated. I highly recommend Jon and plan to call on him for future tree removal services!"

"They did a great job taking down my huge tree. I asked for the extra service of mulching the limbs and splitting all the wood into firewood and stacking. It looked like a very hard job but they saw it through and stuck it out to the end. All done in a day."

"Tony & his extremely talented crew took down 5 large forest trees as if they were tiny trees.. amazing job by Tony & crew. Then his crew put down(with existing bricks) a new revived brick patio. Fantastic job and the hardest working crew. I strongly recommend Tony and his crew for any type of project you might have. Neat and respectful crew. Thank you for this great work done, it was appreciated. Debi and John Olalla."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Completely topping a plum tree is a risky business. Cut too much, and you’ll kill your tree. That said, you do need to trim the top of your tree to encourage bushy growth, maintain your tree’s vase shape, and limit size.

A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall. As it grows, cut it back 12 to 20 inches until it reaches its desired height. Never prune more than one-third of the new growth.

In some states and municipalities, you will need a permit to remove a tree on your property. In many cases where permits are required, a tree must reach a maximum height before a permit is required to remove it. You can either ask your local building department or a tree removal professional if you’ll need a permit. If you do, you can expect to pay between $50 and $150 for the permit alone. Your tree removal company should pull the permit for you and include the permit fee in your total.

Yes, you should trim the lower branches of your maple tree for safety. Trimming maple trees as they grow helps lift the crown and canopy and trains it to grow straight up. A good rule of thumb is to prune enough branches to leave 6 feet of clearance under the tree.

For trimming trees, your best tool is a pair of pruning shears or loppers. Both options work best for branches that are under 3 inches in diameter. Trimming trees with a larger diameter may require a robust tool like a small chainsaw or a handsaw, so take into account your tree’s diameter when deciding between tools.

Your local government is usually in charge of pruning trees on public property, and the power company is responsible for trees near power lines (even if they’re on your property). Whether or not they top these trees depends on their approach to pruning. You won’t be able to do much to control this, but you can contact them to find out more about their pruning process.
