Starting in the late 1980’s as small partnership building and renovating homes in the Pioneer Valley, Thayer Street Associates, Inc. has expanded to include not only residential work but commercial projects for retail businesses, offices, educational facilities, restaurants, medical and dental practices, hospitals, hotels, municipal offices, churches, and historical restoration work. Minor water damage on wood tables can be reversed fairly easily. You can remove stains and light surface damage with a sandblock, then repaint and re-varnish the wood surface. For swollen and rotten wood, you can cut away the damaged parts and use a wood filler as long as the affected area isn’t too much.

Ongoing maintenance of your leather furniture is the only way to prevent it from peeling and cracking. Real leather will peel and crack as it dries out. Leather conditioners are a great way to protect your leather furniture from drying out, and you’ll need to apply it about twice each year. It’s also a good idea to keep abrasive materials away from your leather to prevent cracking and peeling, including belt buckles, shoes, and multi-surface cleaners, especially those that contain alcohol.

You can use most types of wood for a fireplace mantel. You can use simple veneer plywood. If you prefer solid wood, pine is an affordable option that's easy to cut and finish. Walnut is harder, heavier, and highly durable with a rich dark brown color. Hickory offers a lighter color but is similarly durable. Cedar is ideal for a rustic fireplace design.

Depending on the piece, there are times when you can paint over painted furniture. Start by applying a high-adhesion primer so that the new topcoat will stick. However, if the paint is peeling or chipping, it’s best to sand it down, use a paint stripper, or try a deglosser to ensure your new paint will adhere.

Avoid using wood filler for structural repairs or areas with extensive damage. Wood filler is designed for cosmetic fixes like filling small holes, cracks, or surface imperfections, and it doesn't provide the strength needed for load-bearing repairs or large gaps. You also shouldn’t use wood filler in areas exposed to heavy moisture or extreme outdoor conditions unless it’s a product specifically rated for such environments. Wood replacement or a strong epoxy resin is a better solution for severe rot or structural damage.
