Small jobs welcome

"Ben and his crew renovated an entire house for me. They converted a single family home to a 2 family home. Parts of the project involved converting an old garage into a kitchen and living room, creating an almost entirely new luxury bathroom, building a very large, high quality shed, new siding, and constructing a fence. Ben is a master builder, and he has a great crew. The project included some fine woodwork and custom stairs and trim. He and his grew were also able to select and finish the fine woodwork, and paint everything really well. Ben was very energetic in demanding better doors for my project when the supplier delivered sub par doors to us. Ben got them all replaced for me. He was very easy to work with, and comfortable with out of the box creative solutions while still working within the building code. I could always depend on Ben to show up when he said he would, and he is a very hard worker. If youre looking for an honest, capable, and hard working contractor to make your project a reality, then you should call Ben."

"Tanner arrived when scheduled. Built a very sturdy railing for the basement stairs, and some painting and secured portable air conditioners. Very neat and careful job and within the projected budget. Definitely would use his services again."

"These guys are the BEST! Fast, efficient, good natured, innovative and the highest quality of craftsmanship! Project started just to fix woodshed, however it was too far gone so it came down. I saw visions of new project same time Ian did. He drew up plans the next day and I now have a woodshed and screened in back porch. I wanted them to preserve the integrity of my old house and use as much from the old woodshed as possible, barn siding, windows and church pews that came out of the house when converted from a church in 1836. So amazing! Thank you!"

"Found Sentri on Angi. Jeanette and Violet were very pleasant and efficient in getting a contractor to me in the time frame needed. The contractor was excellent and the roof looks great! I would definitely work with them again if I had additional projects."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.

If you’re just replacing a few broken or damaged joists, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 per joist. However, a complete installation for a home or room will take into account the cost of labor, which ranges from $25 to $40 per hour. Floor joist installation for an entire room, for example, can cost between $5,000 and $10,000, depending on the room's size and the materials used.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.
