"not just professional efficient! Unbelievably fair priced literally less than half of what a major competitor on this site quoted using my own parts and my own wire! Just because there are any energy list doesn’t mean some people won’t try and rip you off and fools will pay it. Mr. NAGY is a professional and very ethical. I’d recommend hiring him again and again!"

"How did it go? Not well. I finally just bought the required ladder at 200 USD and did not pursue Kolb Electric further. I should have just bought the ladder in the first place. Live and learn."

"Fox Trail Electric is a pleasure to work with. I’ve used this company for small jobs such as replacing outlets to bigger jobs of installing a new electrical box and running electric outlets outside. They consistently complete jobs in a timely manner and always clean the area when finished."

"They electricians were very professional. We communicated before the appointment so they would know exactly what make and models of fans and TV I wanted installed, and they came prepared. Everything worked exactly like they told me it should, and they ended up installing everything in less time than we planned. They did an outstanding job and I plan on calling them back to install another TV in the near future. I suspect I will use SciFiHomes for all my electrical needs in the future. I really was that impressed. The work was performed in Fredericksburg, VA - Not Woodbridge."

"VRD services installed a NEMA receptacle for a level 2 EV charger. They provided professional thorough and friendly service. I had three estimates on the work and VRD was the best price. They explained everything that they were going to do and all the charges I would highly recommend them to anybody looking to get electrical work done."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The safest option is to let a technician conduct the inspection. However, if you are certain that the capacitor failed and you take all precautions to avoid electric shock, you can take a look yourself. Usually, you can open the front panel of the unit and use a flashlight to find the small capacitor cylinder. It should have a sticker on it that provides its product number, capacity, and similar information that you can note when talking to a contractor.

240V is the standard for more demanding appliances in the United States, whereas 220V is more common elsewhere. The voltage isn’t very different in any practical sense. The United States is a newer country compared to many other regions in the world with a faster adoption of new electrical needs. Appliances in the United States are often bigger than other parts of the world.

Yes—if a breaker is old or damaged, it might not be able to detect power surges or electrical overload. If that happens, the breaker won’t trip. Instead, it will begin to overheat, putting your electrical system at risk of fire or total electrical failure. Circuit breakers don’t last forever, so you can proactively replace old or damaged breakers before they stop working.

You should hire a licensed electrician who is insured to perform any electrical work on your home, including lighting installation. States have different requirements for licensing and certifying electricians, so use Angi’s state licensing tool to review local guidelines.

Here are a few questions to ask electricians before hiring:

  • How many years of electrical experience do you have?

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • Do you work with subcontractors?

  • Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • What is the timeline for completion?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • Can you provide at least three customer references?

Smoke detectors come in two different options: hardwired or battery-operated. While hardwired units are attached directly to the home’s electrical system, a battery-operated smoke detector only needs a simple battery for operation and can be placed virtually anywhere in your home. Some homeowners may mistakenly think their battery-operated units are hardwired in because all their units are interconnected, but many battery-operated units can operate within a smoke alarm network in your home.
