"Jeff was excellent from start to finish! Provided a lot of detail about the project and potential directions to go. His pricing was not the cheapest, but certainly was not highest in terms of quotes we had received. We went with him because he seemed honest and knowledgeable. We will definitely reach out for future plumbing projects."

"My kitchen sink had been making awful noises for a while and was referred to Prince William Plumbing. The owner that answered was very friendly and was able to make an appointment for the next day. John came out on time and was able to diagnose and fix the problem in a short period of time. He was professional and cleaned up when he was done. Wouldn't hesitate to use Prince William Plumbing again!"

"Oscar came on time. After assessing the repair, he discussed the fix and immediately installed a new outdoor faucet, replaced the shut off valve and even offered to come out in the fall and flush the line."

"Erik was great to work with, came out on Christmas Eve to give me a (fair!) quote and said the work could be started the day after Christmas. Was very understanding of our urgency of the issue (sewer line clogged with roots). The workers were friendly, considerate and cleaned up very well (to include even replanting our bushes that had to be dug up!). Would recommend!"

"They were an extremely til notch company to deal with great customer service we had a fire and needed a complete rebuild Reid and A Hours amazed us as they dealt with our insurance company and our insurance company was impressed because they have all their master plumbing, gas, electric HVAC and plumbing licenses. They have a residential building license. They turned in all their insurance and Workmen's Comp. and their bond certificate over to the insurance company and they were able to do everything for us and we did not have to go higher a bunch of different contractors! The insurance adjuster came over and even commented it is some of the best work he's ever seen. They were extremely clean , very detailed , on time , extremely communicative and for us the price was worth it!! Our home is back and just in time as we have a new baby! We highly highly recommend After Hours Home Improvement!"

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Start by unscrewing the overflow valve, which is located on the wall of your tub between the floor drain and the tub spout. Gently insert a plumbing snake down into the pipe, move it back and forth, and pull it out. Remove any hair, debris, and soap scum that comes out with it. Repeat the process until the snake comes out clean, and then reinstall the cap on your overflow valve.

It takes hair about two years to dissolve on its own in the drain without the use of any tool or help. Fortunately, using a drain snake, plunger, or any of the actions mentioned above to dissolve the hair will help get rid of the clog in as little as 15 minutes.

Regardless of the drain cleaner type you choose to use, they all work through chemical reactions that create heat. Thanks to the heat, the clogged hair begins to dissolve until it is able to be flushed away. To avoid clogs in your drain due to hair, use hair catchers and empty them out after every shower.

It is generally not recommended to pour hot or boiling water down a drain to unfreeze pipes due to significant risks. In some cases, the sudden temperature change can cause more ice buildup or produce steam, which increases pressure and could cause the pipe to burst, leading to costly damage and potential burn injuries. While hot water might help with a partially frozen drainpipe, it is unlikely to thaw a completely blocked water pipe further down the system. Additionally, boiling water can damage plastic pipes over time. Safer and more effective methods include using a space heater near the frozen section or applying hot towels directly to the pipe.

The cost to unclog a drain varies based on the location and severity of the clog. For simple clogs within your home, such as in a sink, toilet, or shower, hiring a plumber typically costs between $110 and $350, with an average of around $200. Snaking a toilet or sink usually costs between $110 and $275, while a bathtub or shower clog costs about $225.

For a more serious clog in the main sewer line, the cost is higher. Clearing a main line clog generally costs between $200 and $600, with an average of about $380. However, prices can range from as low as $100 for snaking a minor clog to over $1,600, particularly if advanced methods like video inspection and hydrojetting are needed for a large or hard-to-reach blockage. Some severe main line clogs can cost upwards of $1,000 to clear depending on factors like the cause of the clog, its distance from an accessible cleanout, and whether the pipe is located beneath an occupied space (e.g., in an apartment building). You may be able to save money on minor clogs by using a drain snake or bladder yourself.
