"Same team of folks at McCrea have been servicing our HVAC for years in two separate houses in the area. Decided to have my old builder-grade system replaced. They did a great job! Very professional crew! Good employee continuity leads to good results. Highly recommend!!!"

"We were having a tough time with our HVAC, I got quotes from different companies, but couldnâ t select any of them because the prices were too high and was taking weeks to install the new system. Total Comfort provided a decent solution to replace our AC and Propane furnace for a reasonable cost within 2 days. I highly recommend them!"

"Fitch Services has done plumbing work for me (water heater replacement in restricted space requiring repiping of water meter). They did fantastic work and the cost was approximately 1/4 of the amount that the major plumbing companies in Charlottesville were asking for. You read that right: 25% of the cost for the exact same work (and they were flexible, allowing for me to purchase the water heater and handle delivery on my own). I am going to exclusively use them for plumbing going forward and will also try their electrical and HVAC service."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

A dual evaporator coil is a specific design that allows the AC system to cool different compartments at different levels. It’s usually seen in refrigerators and similar appliances, but not in whole-house air conditioning systems. Talk with your AC technician about the best uses for a dual evaporator coil.

At a minimum, an HVAC system should be serviced once per year. However, a twice-a-year service schedule—once in the spring for the cooling system and once in the fall for the heating system—is often recommended, especially for older systems, heat pumps, or in climates with extreme temperatures. Regular service, which includes inspection, cleaning, and maintenance, ensures the system runs efficiently, helps prevent costly breakdowns during peak seasons, and can extend the unit's lifespan. You can also schedule a service if you notice issues like poor performance or strange noises.

Yes, ventless portable air conditioners exist, and not all standard portable air conditioners must be vented through a window.

Ventless portable units, often called evaporative coolers, do not have exhaust hoses. They use a water reservoir and a cooling pad to add moisture to the air, making it feel cooler. These units work best in dry climates because humid areas cannot absorb much additional moisture.

For standard portable air conditioners that do require venting, a window is not the only option; they can also be vented through a door, wall, or ceiling. However, it is essential to vent these units properly. Running a standard portable AC without venting it is counterproductive because it needs to expel heat to cool the room. Failing to do so will only increase the room's temperature.

You will only need to refill your AC with refrigerant if it has a leak. Otherwise, a modern, well-maintained AC will most likely never need a recharge. You may notice a leak in an older system if your bills are higher, you hear a hissing sound, or if the air is blowing out hot.

Yes, mini split systems cool equally as well as central air. While a central system circulates air throughout the entire home at the same temperature, a mini split system allows each room to be cooled or heated at different temperatures based on your own preferences. Hire a HVAC professional to determine which type of system is best for your home.
