I have spent many years working as a general contractor including working for a commercial builder, kitchen and bath remodeling company, and property management company. I also previously owned and operated as a class a general contractor. I have experience in most areas of home repair. I am looking to slow down and focus on smaller projects with attention to giving clients quality services at reasonable prices.

"They were responsive to initial call, showed up when said, then nothing for a while, we had to call them a few times.  Then, they came back and did the work.  We were a little disappointed that they did not do the dry wall around the new installation.  They had told us they would do "everything."  so, now we are having to have the drywall done.  Also, the wall of the bath surround was not in true - a little off, making it hard to do the drywall.  Just little grumbles which I am sure we will overcome.
Otherwise, they were quick, efficient, clean and tidy.  They cleaned up after themselves.  A few weeks later, found a small crack in the new bathtub.  Nothing major, can be fixed, but was a little disappointing to see that."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

In most cases, no, you won’t need a permit to replace drywall. If you’re changing the floorplan of your home by adding or removing walls during the drywall project, then you might need a permit, but replacement or repairs usually doesn’t require a permit. Your drywall professional should be able to confirm whether or not a permit is required for your project. If it is, it’s likely to add between $50 and $150 to your total cost. Keep in mind that you will need permits if you plan to install new electrical wiring or plumbing lines behind your new drywall.

Plaster is a beautiful finish but is labor-intensive to install and remove. It’s vulnerable to cracking and more sensitive to moisture variance than drywall. Installing plaster on a new wall is an expensive process that can take days to weeks, depending on the scope. Removing a plaster wall can also be quite expensive and time-consuming.

You should leave a gap between drywall sheets because they naturally expand and contract along with the building framing as temperature and humidity change. Most pro drywall installers leave a gap of about ⅛ inch between drywall sheets, allowing the sheets to expand, contract, and shift without cracking or becoming damaged. If you don’t leave enough gaps between slabs, the edges will press against each other when they expand, and the pressure can cause visible cracks.

Whether you apply the drywall mesh before or after drywall mud depends on the type of patch it is. For self-adhesive patches, you’ll put the patch down first and then coat it with mud. Mesh patches that are not self-adhesive will require you to put mud down first and then press the mesh into it, followed by additional coats of mud.

It doesn’t matter which way you lay drywall, and you can choose to install it horizontally or vertically depending on the size of the wall and how tall the ceiling is. It’s easier to lay drywall sheets vertically if you have a taller ceiling, but laying sheets horizontally makes it easier to apply joint compound.
