"This review is 10 years overdue! Ten years ago I contracted Mottern Masonry to install my front walkway. The company was highly recommended by a friend who had previously used their services. Before signing the contract I spoke to and received estimates from 3 other companies. Prices varied, design ideas varied and materials varied. I chose to work with Jeff Mottern. Mottern was not the least expensive option but I had a sense of trust with them that I did not readily have with the other companies and Jeff had great design ideas. I'm a fairly middle of the road type person and believe you get what you pay for. After paying the deposit and scheduling the work I started to get feedback from friends about how I should not have agreed to use their services because the concrete under the stone would crack causing problems with the walkway. They were sure it would eventually crumble. Everyone who told me this estimated the walkway to last 4-5 years max! Looking back I am glad that feedback came after the deposit was paid and work scheduled. I wonder if I would have given pause to this and ultimately found another contractor. I am very glad I did not. Flash forward 10 (maybe 11 years) the walkway looks like the day they installed it. Exactly the same, and I still love it. The stone they used is gorgeous. The walkway is quite long, curves and has great visual interest. When I spoke to Jeff about what people were telling me he assured me that would not be my reality. Their process is different. They used (and I could be getting some of this wrong as I am not an expert in this field) thick cut PA flagstone on a 4 inch 3500 psi concrete slab) and as such, the results are different. In the end longevity is expected. I am certainly enjoying that in reality. So much so that when my husband and I decided to install a patio we called Jeff. Didn't hesitate. Imagine my surprise when the same crew showed up to install my patio! Same guys! For me it says a lot about how he must treat his employees for them to still be with him after all these years. I have now added that to the list of reasons why I am glad to have originally hired them and to have rehired them this year. The patio is now finished. It's gorgeous, the stone is stunning. We opted to keep it simple but go with a larger size. We installed a large patio (about 30'x27') with two curved 12 foot seating walls. This stone is the prettiest I have ever seen. The crew did an amazing job and are so professional. Artisans really. It is without hesitation that I recommend their services."
