"Excellent operation from the project manager to the front office and the installers. Not only did they do siding installation, they also installed a metal roof and multiple windows. Great outfit, thanks Skyfall."

"It went extremely well!! I had a serious leak and this past week we had 61/2 inches of rain. I went on Angie's list for referrals and got several. I called three. Damon, owner of Roof Crafters called back and made arrangements to come out the next day. They went to work and found a number of holes in the roof and repaired them. I was pleased with the quick response and the job. That night it rained again and there was still a leak, but it was clear that progress had been made as opposed to 4 buckets, I needed one the other night. I emailed Damon to let him know. He called early the next morning and immediately came back out. Damon also used an IR camera to study the paths of the leaks in the ceiling to help pinpoint the location of the break in the roof. They were able to find three more holes in the rubberized roof. There was no charge for the return visit, but I was so pleased with the response and their work that I wrote a Thank You check. Last night we had a short, heavy shower and it did not leak. I won't know for sure until the next storm, but what I do know is I have a dependable, quality company that can take care of my roof. Thank you Damon"

"Mr. Townsley was professional and very knowledgeable. He was straight forward when providing the repair options when accessing the work that needed to be done for my roof. Above all he was reliable. He called when he said he would and he showed up ready to work. I wouldn't have any problem recommending him."

"It went awesome from start to finish and we could not be happier with the finished product! Just like last time when they built our custom deck and screened in porch! Troy is a true Craftsman and always does exactly what he says he's going to do without ever trying to cut corners! If we had one message to tell to other people who's looking for a contractor It would have to be not to hesitate on hiring Troy for your project!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The most obvious and severe sign of a roof leak is the presence of wet spots on your ceilings, specifically on the top floor of your home. You can also identify a roof leak from your attic if you see sagging insulation or if you notice mold growth or water stains on the rafters or the underside of the roof deck. From the street, look for cracked or missing shingles, moss growth, and shingles that are curling upward, all of which can suggest a leak.

After you take steps to determine when your roof was last replaced, you may realize you need a new one. Hiring a roofing contractor you can trust involves asking for references and examples of past work. Verify any qualifications the roofer provides. Ask about the expected time to complete the work and about putting guarantees in writing.

Clay tile roofing is more susceptible to damage from impact than something like a metal roof or even asphalt shingles, so they aren’t ideal in areas that see frequent windblown debris or hail. Clay tile roofs are also an average of $8,000 more expensive than asphalt shingle roofs, so up-front cost is an important consideration to make before committing.

The roof pitch on a Cape Cod house is normally 8/12 or 10/12, meaning the roof rises 8 to 10 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. This is steeper than the now-standard 6/12 pitch, as Cape Cod homes were originally popular in northern states, where the steeper pitch helped snowfall slide readily off the roof.

A gambrel roof and a mansard roof are similar in that they are both hipped roofs, meaning they have double slopes—one steep and one more gradual above the steep slope. The difference is that a gambrel roof has a double slope on only two sides of the structure, whereas a mansard roof has a double slope on all four sides.
