Plumbing questions, answered by experts

The two main types of bathtub faucets are screw-on and slip-on. A screw-on faucet has threads inside and screws onto the pipe, while a slip-on faucet slips onto the pipe and is secured with a setscrew on its underside. You may also encounter other designs, such as freestanding, wall-mount, deck-mount, or other high-end specialized systems. It is important to identify your specific faucet type before attempting removal to avoid damaging the pipes or the wall.

Professional plumbers use many high-grade chemicals to unclog drains. Many use hydrochloric acid, known as muriatic acid, when it comes to extreme blockages.

Pipefitting is a more specialized profession, and pipefitters work with complex systems and low- and high-pressure pipes, so it can be considered harder than plumbing. Though each profession comes with its challenges, the nature of pipefitting requires working with heavier materials in fast-paced and dangerous environments, which can be more challenging than working on residential and commercial plumbing systems.

Draining is the process of removing sediment buildup that has accumulated at the bottom of your hot water heater’s tank. Flushing is a more elaborate process that involves running fresh water through the tank to clean the inside thoroughly. You should at least drain your hot water heater once per year and flush it every other year—better yet, alternate between draining and flushing every six months.

You should check water pressure twice a year to ensure there aren’t any irregularities and that it isn’t too high. It’s also smart to check it any time you notice symptoms of high water pressure (like banging pipes, inconsistent water flow, and leaky fixtures). Similarly, if you live in an area that’s prone to water pressure fluctuations due to municipal supply changes, elevation, or seasonal temperature shifts, check it more frequently. You can buy an affordable water pressure gauge and check the water pressure yourself.
