"Jeff was excellent from start to finish! Provided a lot of detail about the project and potential directions to go. His pricing was not the cheapest, but certainly was not highest in terms of quotes we had received. We went with him because he seemed honest and knowledgeable. We will definitely reach out for future plumbing projects."

"Tommy was professional and knowledgeable. He arrived at both appointments on time and got the valve and water heater replaced quickly. I would highly recommend them. I comparison shopped two other plumbing companies during the day and DB's was the best in knowledge and price."

"Charles heads up Ninja Plumbing and quickly answered the call for a clogged kitchen double sink. The root cause was accurately triaged to a backup on the main drain pipe where the two PVC drain pipes connected. With a declogging auger machine, Charles was able to unclog the main drain pipe drain running the full 50ft auger metal line and test the water successfully draining from half full sink of water all in under 60 minutes. Charles' ongoing interaction & communications during the full session of the fix was fairly reassuring versus other contractors who may mind more onlooking from customers for edification."

"After I read the Angie's List reviews, I went to their website and discovered they have a coupon code on their site to save you either $25 or $50. My total before the $50 discount was $286. This included a $49 charge to come out and the parts/labor for the work that was done. They called ahead to say that they were running a few minutes behind. They were courteous. I asked for estimates on 3 other plumbing issues. The tech wrote out everything and recommended that I buy some of the parts to save money and then they could do the repair work. The Powder Room Toilet was constantly running water and the handle was hard to flush.  The plumber had to leave to pick up the part that he needed.  He repaired the toilet the same day and was very professional. I would use Appleton Campbell Plumbing again.

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can pour water down the toilet to help it flush. For each flush, you’ll need 1 to 2 gallons of water for newer toilets or 3 to 5 gallons of water for older toilets. Rather than dumping the entire bucket in all at once, pour the water in slowly for the best results. If you’re pouring water down the toilet to help it flush after a clog, only use 1 gallon of hot water.

The lifespan of a toilet can vary significantly. While the porcelain body itself can last up to 50 years or more with proper care, most plumbers suggest an average functional lifespan of 10 to 25 years, and many homeowners replace their toilets after about 20 years.

A toilet's longevity is influenced by factors like maintenance quality, hard water buildup, and damage to the finish. It's also important to note that internal components have much shorter lifespans than the bowl; for example, flappers may last only a few years, while fill valves can last around 10 years.

Even if an older toilet is still functional, consider upgrading to a high-efficiency model to save on water costs.

While technically possible, it is unlikely that a clogged toilet will fix itself. Clogs caused by water-soluble materials like toilet paper or human waste may eventually break down in the water, allowing flow to resume. However, this can take time, and any clogs from solid objects require manual removal. In most scenarios, especially if you don't have another bathroom, it is best to fix the clog yourself or call a plumber.

It is safe to flush the toilet even if the pipes are frozen, and this may even help clear out the pipes. But if the supply line is frozen, the toilet won’t refill itself until it’s thawed out. You can still flush by pouring water into the tank to refill it.

You generally cannot replace a 10-inch rough-in toilet with a 12-inch model without making significant plumbing updates. A 12-inch rough-in toilet will not fit a 10-inch rough-in space because the floor drain is in the wrong position. To accommodate the larger toilet, you would need to move the drainpipe, which could cost between $0.75 and $30 per linear foot, plus labor. In most cases, it is more cost-effective and simpler to purchase a new 10-inch rough-in toilet. However, it is possible to install a 10-inch rough-in toilet in a 12-inch space by using a longer connector.
