"Gary from The Pipe Doctor was amazing. As soon as he walked in the front door and I told him the bath shower faucet was leaking he said the cartridge in the shower handle needed to be cleaned. He knew exactly what the problem was and was very patient with me while I asked about other possibilities I had found on Google (which obviously makes me an expert). He just knew without a doubt what the problem was. He said if he could just clean the cartridge the price would be about half the cost of replacing the cartridge with a new one. I agreed to both options in case the new cartridge had somehow become damaged. Once in the bathroom, he was surprised that the faucet handle was brand new, it had just been installed within the last month. The plumber who installed the shower handle was not able to find the cause of the leak, I had called him when water leaked through the ceiling below after a shower. He just caulked around the chrome plate. Gary found the newly installed cartridge was clogged with pieces of pipe liner used by Fairfax Water. He pulled pieces out of the cartridge and then asked me to turn on the main water line for about 1 second to flush the line, I did this four times. After each of the first 3 flushes, he pulled liner out of the pipe. It ran clear after the fourth flush. The pieces measure from 1/2 inch to 2.5 inches long. He did not need to replace the cartridge as it had not been damaged. He suggested I contact Fairfax Water, ask if they had installed pipe liner recently in my neighborhood, and ask if they planned to flush the lines. He also suggested I ask Fairfax Water to reimburse me for the repair, which did but I would be very surprised if they agree to that. Gary said liner could still end up clogging other plumbing in my house, and this could be a problem for me and my neighbors for months, you just never know when the liner pieces will make their way through the pipes. Gary is a very upbeat, friendly, positive person. He explained to me every step of the way what he was doing, why, and what he found, as well as the cause. He said the problem was not due to something the last plumber did. I did send that plumber an email just so he would know what to look for if another customer called with a leaking faucet. I had called The Pipe Doctor several times before and once after Gary's visit. I am so forgetful, wish I remembered her name, because she was always friendly, courteous, and answered all my questions. I would like to thank her for all her help and patience. The Pipe Doctor is now my plumber, they are experts. Below is a link to a Fairfax County article on the installation of pipe liners throughout the county. [*** Link removed ***]"

"Another great experience hiring MY PLUMBING HEROES. Owner, Jonathan Nation responded quickly to our afterhours call on a Friday evening. He certainly is my hero! He opened up the blocked sewage line and installed a new toilet. The bill was pleasantly surprising. It was very, very reasonable; especially for an emergency. Highly recommend MY Plumbing Heroes."

"The kitchen drain stopped draining today. I cleared the p-trap under the sink but that wasn't it. There was a clog way down the line and I couldn't get to it. Mr. Trujillo was able to come the same day and use his power snake to clear the line. Unfortunately it was after 5pm so there was an overtime charge so it was $275 total. Worth it. Mr. Trujillo is excellent. He is prompt, courteous, and professional. He gets right to work with no delay and cleans up afterward. I highly recommend him."

"Viking Plumbing helped me with a kitchen sink install. Office staff is polite and helpful. Jeff is extremely knowledgeable and personable. Prices seem quite fair for the services provided. My old sink was somewhat difficult and time consuming to remove but Jeff charged me for a standard install. Overall great experience and I will use Viking Plumbing next time."

Purchased Angie's list deal for free visit and 1st Hour of service for a pre-paid $49.  On first visit, it was quickly determined that the condo associate couldn't turn off the water to the building.  And the plumber didn't have a part needed to install the faucet in any case; so for both reasons the visit needed to be rescheduled.

After some delay due to the Condo Association needing a major repair to fix their problem; we tried again.  This time a new person came 1/2 hour early, which is a problem since they notify condo owners the build water will be shut of only during designated times; however the maintenance manager made an except and shut off the water early.  However, I indicated that they needed two individuals to move out the stacked washer/dryer to access the necessary plumbing; and the 1st guy was expecting the 2nd to come at the scheduled time.  So we waited and he never showed up.  And he was to have the necessary parts.  The 1st guy was able scrounge in the truck for awhile and did find the parts he needed, purely by luck.  Next, the 1st guy couldn't remove the washer/dryer himself and the maintenance manager helped him.  And he proceeded to make the repairs.  Subsequently, the unit needed to be put back, and the maintenance manager was no longer present.  I was able to help reluctantly since I recently injured my back; but with some pain and effort we got it back in place.  At some point towards the end, the 1st guy had a very heated discussion with the office about never working with "CJ" again (I assuming the 2nd guy who didn't show).

Now on to payment; the I had discussions with the office coordinator several times that my Angie's list voucher was still valid after the initial situation.  When the 1st guy called it in, they didn't honor that, indicating I used it with first visit.  A visit in which no work was done, and he didn't have the correct parts even if he could have.  So I was charged the full price.

I'm fairly certain the "2nd guy/CJ" was the same individual who came out the first time.  And while he was "fine", I didn't really like his demeanor.  I recognize he made the visit and couldn't perform the work; thus the reason I didn't really object on not getting credit on the 2nd visit.  But was not happy after being assured it was going to carry over.  And his not showing caused the 1st guy to spend billable time looking for parts and struggling with the washer unit, and worse making me and my bad back help him.

I want to say the guy who did the work was polite to me; seemed to do a quality job, and got through a difficult situation.  With the exception of the phone call back to the office in front of me, I don't have any complaints on his service.  I gave the D on price because of the non-application of the Angie's deal; but the price was probably fair given the time spent otherwise at about $95/hr.

In the end, it wasn't a disaster, and the price wasn't a real problem, but it still wasn't a particularly pleasant experience and didn't really instill much confidence.  I think I would try another firm next time to see if the experience was more positive.

"WOW!!!  From the initial contact via email we were provided with a detailed answer to every question we asked by Jake's wife, Dawn.  She gave us a price for what we wanted done immediately and that price didn't change after the work was done.  We knew the exact name and model number of the filter we were getting before we even set up the appointment.  We were given the price that included the filter and installation.  We shopped around and did further research for a couple of weeks before deciding to get the work done.  We contacted Dawn again and she was super helpful and provided the phone number that we needed to speak with Yolanda to get added to Jake's schedule.  Yolanda was very professional and worked with me to find a date that worked with Jake's schedule and ours.  We knew that they take pride in their company just from our initial contact and setting up our appointment.  Our appointment was scheduled and Jake arrived between the one hour time frame we were given.  He was polite, professional, and very helpful.  Jake installed our whole house filter and cleaned up everything.  His work is very neat and professional.  Jake took time after installing to go over everything we needed to know about the filter as we took notes.  He also let us know that if we had any questions in the future that we could call him or email Dawn.  I honestly feel that he truly meant that and would be more than willing to answer any question that came up later.  We definitely found the best plumbing service!  Jake takes pride in his work and it shows in the business that he runs.  We will definitely use A-Master Plumbing for our next project.

Sink Installation questions, answered by experts

Common problems include leaks, clogs, and low water pressure. Regular maintenance prevents major disruptions.

Emergency plumbers charge a significantly higher rate than for standard service, typically 1.5 to 3 times the normal hourly cost. You can expect to pay between $100 and $500 per hour, with an average of around $200 per hour. In addition to the higher hourly rate, many plumbers charge a flat emergency service or trip fee, which can be between $150 and $300. The final cost depends on the timing of the call; prices are highest for major holidays, followed by weekends and after-hours service on weekdays. For a complex job on a major holiday, a master plumber's rate could reach as high as $600 per hour.

For safety when installing a vanity, attaching the vanity to the wall is ideal to prevent it from moving. Typically, sinks must be 4 inches away from bathtubs. Also, most states require that you have 21 inches in front of a sink, but the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) recommends 30 inches for more comfort.

Putting in a new bidet attachment or seat requires as little as 30 minutes. Installing a full bidet toilet or stand-alone bidet might take one to three hours. Additionally, if you need a GFCI outlet installed, that can take 30 minutes to three hours depending on the complexity of the job.

The best option is to alter the plumbing. Moving and centering the drain pipe behind the sink usually does the trick and creates the sleek, minimalist look that pedestal sinks offer. If you don’t want to do any plumbing work, there are a few decorating hacks:

  • Painting the pipes

  • Placing shelves, plants, or baskets in front of the pipes

  • Adding a sink skirt
